Obama releases federal funds for recovery efforts in Maine

2011-02-02 08:34:49 GMT+7 (ICT)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNI NEWS) -- President Barack Obama on Tuesday declared a major disaster exists in the State of Maine and ordered Federal aid to supplement recovery efforts in the area struck by severe storms and flooding last December.

The declaration releases federal funding, which will be available for State, Tribal, and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities.

During the period of December 12-19, 2010, harsh weather brought severe storms and flooding, damaging the counties of Aroostook, Piscataquis and Washington, and the Tribal lands of the Passamaquoddy Tribe located entirely within Washington County.

In addition, the declaration allows federal funding to be available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures for all counties and Tribes within the State.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, however, explained that additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the State and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
