PHUKET: -- Tony Knight, a leading figure in Phuket yachting for more than a decade, died in Brisbane, Australia last night after succumbing to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

“Tony had a motorcycle accident in Australia on Friday and seemed not too bad, but his condition deteriorated over the next few days as we believe his lung or spleen was punctured,” explained Mick Kealy, commodore of the Ao Chalong Yacht Club (ACYC).

“He ended up being airlifted to a Brisbane hospital where he passed away in the intensive care unit,” he added.

Through years of dedicated support, especially through his work with the ACYC, Mr Knight became synonymous with sailing in Phuket.

“Tony has many close friends in Phuket and was a vital asset to the Ao Chalong Yacht Club for over a decade as committee member, race officer and MC.

“He will be sadly missed for his kindness, his wit and easy going nature,” Mr Kealy said.

Mr Knight is survived by his wife Ming, son Raymond, twin daughters Nit and Noi, and eight-month-old daughter Elisabeth.

A wake will be held at the ACYC clubhouse next Tuesday from 6pm.

Phuket Memorial for Tony Knight to be held Saturday

PHUKET: -- The memorial service to mark the passing of popular Phuket yachtsman Tony Knight has been rescheduled to Saturday night.

“There have been many, many messages of sadness over Tony Knight’s death and the loss of a good friend and formidable character, with everyone expressing the desire to attend the wake planned for him,” said Mick Kealy, commodore at Ao Chalong Yacht Club (ACYC).

“The date therefore has been changed in order that more people can attend the ceremony at the Yacht Club and celebrate his life. The wake is now scheduled for Saturday, February 19, from 6pm,” he added.

Photos of Mr Knight will be shown on a projector during the evening. People are asked to drop off CDs at the yacht club or email webmaster [at] acyc-phuket.com with selections they would like to share.

“The evening will also incorporate a fundraiser, including a raffle, with the money raised going to help support Tony's family in Australia. We hope all his friends can attend,” he added.
