CELEBES SEA (BNO NEWS) -- A strong earthquake struck deep underneath the Celebes Sea on late Thursday evening, seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The 6.5-magnitude earthquake at 10.39 p.m. local time (1439 GMT) was centered about 308 kilometers (191 miles) southeast of Jolo in the Philippines. It struck about 528 kilometers (328 miles) deep, making it a deep earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

No tsunami warnings were issued and no damage was expected because of the depth and the location of the earthquake.
