Nine people killed, 27 injured after car bomb in northern Iraq

SALAH AL-DIN, IRAQ (BNO NEWS) -- A car bomb on Thursday exploded leaving nine civilians dead and 27 injured in the northern Salah al-Din governorate in Iraq, the Aswat al-Iraq news agency reported.

A vehicle loaded with explosives was detonated on Thursday noon in the northern area of al-Dujail district. The blast occurred as Shiite pilgrims were on a procession towards holy shrines. No group has claimed responsibility for the terror attack.

After the explosion on the Baghdad-Mosul road, six people were declared dead and three other died later. In addition, 27 individuals were injured and authorities said that 10 of them were in serious condition.

Salah al-Din Governor Ahmed Abdullah Abad and Police Chief Kareem Jabr al-Khazraji went to the site and checked on the wounded individuals. The Shiite pilgrims were heading to the Askari Imams shrines in northern al-Dujail.

Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle packed with explosives was detonated via a remote control. Al-Dujail is located approximately 90 kilometers south of Tikrit, the capital of Salah al-Din.

On Wednesday, six people were killed and at least 75 wounded after three car bombs shook the northern Iraq's oil-rich city of Kirkuk which is populated by Arab, Kurds and Turkomans. This has made the capital the epicenter of ethnic tensions for a long time.
