Metro police ready to secure UDD rally on 19 Feb

BANGKOK, 16 February 2011 (NNT) – During the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) rally on 19 February, the Metropolitan Police will dispatch 27 companies of officers for the peace-keeping operations.

According to Spokesperson of the Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) Police Major General Prawut Thavornsiri, a security plan has been presented by the Metropolitan Police ahead of the fresh UDD gathering scheduled for 19 February.

A total of 27 companies of police will be sent to patrol the group’s main protest site at Ratchaprasong Intersection as well as places along the route of its mobilization, including the Supreme Court and the Democracy Monument. Pol Maj Gen Prawut expressed his confidence that the officers would be able to keep the situation peaceful and under control.

Speaking of the prolonged demonstration of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), the CAPO Spokesman revealed that investigative officers are compiling evidence for seeking arrest warrants against over 10 members of the group for violating the Internal Security Act within the next couple of days. As for the negotiation effort for the protesters’ reopening of roads, he admitted that it had not been successful due to their worries over safety issues.
