A middle-aged German member of a gang of forgers was arrested in Pattaya in possession of a massive amount of equipment for producing millions of fake Baht. Apprehension of the other gang members is expected soon.

Pattaya, 21st February 2011 [PDN]: At approximately 9.00 pm Lt. Col. Kreetha Tonkhanarat, Superintendent of Children & Woman Protection Center Region 2 and a team of inspectors executed a plan to apprehend a middle-aged German who was a member of a black money gang.

The German man had deceived a German tourist into participating in his venture. The victim then informed police that he had been asked to pay 10,000 baht for purchasing the equipment needed to produce the fake money. Accordingly a sting operation was set up, in which an appointment was made for the two to meet and to exchange the equipment for 10,000 baht in cash. The place chosen was the car park at Top Supermarket, on the corner of Central Pattaya Road and 2nd Road.

Millions of fake Baht notes ??????

with the crap on the table and what was listed in the article it looks more like he was scamming the tourist out of money - there is no way he could have made even a single passable Baht note with this stuff

this is an old time nigerian scam, the put the chemical on the paper which reveals the 1000B notes (real) and then convince the guy who paid the 10,000Baht to invest 100's of thousands of baht because he is so excited. Its a lame magic trick

The evidence he was carrying included 3 bottles of chemical solutions, 2 rolls of foil paper, 2 rolls of tape papers, about 1,000 pieces of black and green hard papers cut to the size of a 1,000 baht bank note"

I have all of this at home, may take a few hours to cut "hard papers' because there hard?

Surly this man only need refute the accusations. Ask the prosecution to demonstrate how it would be possible to produce notes from the materials found on him. I would think it would be hard to print money without plates and proper paper etc.<img src="http://static.thaivisa.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif" alt="" class="bbc_emoticon">

What a joke. typical the nation. Unless Thai banknotes are made by kindergarten students, you need a bit more equipment than this. The header should have been: German arrested for trying to defraud a country man for a handful of baht. Luckily most Germans run to the authorities right away. Befhel ist Befhel after all.

World class reporting...

World class resort...

World class tourists...

:cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

Your spot on the money!

Show us the money! Did not see any fake money nor any paper that could be used to make money. Conclusion: this is an attempt to defraud someone not counterfeit money.

The reporting is poor. Sounds like police trying to talk up the story. Hopefully he will get a fair trial. Whats the penalty for scamming someone :)

So this guy you meet in a bar, in Pattaya, you have never met before offers you the chance to make millions of baht for a lousy 10,000 baht :o &lt;deleted&gt; !!!!

Now just what F%^$ing idiot thinks that anybody is going to sell you this when they just need to make the MILLIONS they are telling you that you can make if you give them a pittance ?

I'm sorry but some people just deserve to be had over.

Stick with the old proverb

" If it sounds too good to be true then the chances are it is "

Scams like this only work when the greed factor kicks in. ;)

Sounds like the old Black Money scam (or wash wash scam)

You do not need "equipment", just some paper, foil and a few bottles of fluid and a gullible idiot.

Google <black money scam>.

There are a number of variations, one involves iodine and vaseline to coat the "notes" and a Vitamin C solution to magically clean them, turning worthless paper into banknotes again.

I had 2 Nigerians try this on 11 years ago. As far as I can see this is a set up for the same scam

No one is actually makes fake money in this scam. The story I got was this guys father was a treasurer who was murdered in Nigeria and his son had escaped with $x million.

They arrive with money, in my case $100 or in this case,1000 baht covered in this black powder and tell you they need a chemical to remove it. They told us their Embassy were the only people who could supply it.

They even offered to leave the money so it could be checked at the bank.

It just so happens they have a little of the chemical left and give you a demo.

The chemical removes the black powder and underneath is of course a real banknote, not a fake.

The con is to get you to pay for the chemical and in return get a share of the banknotes they have, not produce fake banknotes.

Deserves everything he gets for being so stupid. First thing anyone is going to do is Google "black money"

Alleged counterfeiter caught in sting in central Pattaya

PATTAYA: -- A 55-year-old German national with an expired passport was arrested by undercover police from the Region 2 Women and Child Protection Unit after attempting to sell materials used to counterfeit banknotes. Mr Peter-Jurgen Gramm, from Germany, was arrested in front of Tops supermarket on Monday and found to be in possession of chemicals and paper material used in the production of counterfeit money. The man was taken back to Pattaya police station where he confessed to his actions and where it was also found his passport had expired six days earlier. Mr Gramm had come to official notice after someone he had tried to interest in buying his chemicals and papers had contacted police.

What does this crime have to do with the Protection of women and children division. Isn't that a bit like the Vice squad tracking down stolen antiques. TIT!!!

My goodness me...what drivel! Like everyone else who read the headline i was imagining an underground bunker (well he is German!) with machinery similar to what the security printers DE LA RUE use to print "Millions" of anything...hahahahaaa what an anticlimax...which actually made it ludicrously funny.:D

A common theme in this thread seems to be that if you are naive, you deserve to be scammed. It's disappointing to see that so many people seem to think that way. To most - but not all - of us, most scams are not difficult to detect, but there are also some extremely sophisticated scams that most people are not immediately capable of detecting. Who deserves the suffering - only the ones who 'should have' realised the more obvious of scams, or everyone (no matter how sophisticated the scheme may be)? My view is that all people deserve protection, no matter how gullible they may happen to be. To hold the view that 'he or she deserved it' is to minimise or even legitimise the criminality of the operation itself. Shameful.

Tanlic.

Sounds as if we both met the same pair. Was it near Phahon Yothin Rd. at the back of Dong Muang? I met one Nigerian in BIG C and, at that time, being non racist (& obviously gullible!!) had a pleasant chat and a cup of coffee with him. He said that his friend would be most interested to meet me too. Okay I wasn't doing anything at the time so thought an interesting experience so said "Yes"!! I went with him to a small quiet flat of all places where I got exactly the same blurb as you. NO way was I going to participate but the whole time was wondering how I was going to get out as was worried they might think the first thing I would do would be go to the police as I knew where they operated from. I pretended to be semi interested but did not have the money in Thailand and it would mean transfering money from England which would take a few days so would need to think about it. I finally escaped VERY MUCH to my relief!!

Like me I am sure that your mummy said to you when you were very little "Don't get into a car with a strange man".. HOW TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
