MOSCOW, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) -- The Russian Defense Ministry on Monday announced that the Army will receive advance weaponry including new air defense missile systems in 2011, RIA Novosti reported.

The Russian Ground Forces will be equipped with modernized S-300V4 air defense missile systems, Buk-M2 medium-range air defense systems, Tor-M2 short-range air defense systems, and portable air defense systems.

The Defense Ministry informed that the European country will buy advanced and highly-effective weaponry to meet the challenges of modern warfare. The purchases are part of the $651 billion rearmament plan announced last week.

In addition, the Russian Ground Forces will continue receiving Iskander-M (SS-26 Stone) tactical ballistic missiles, new multiple-launch rocket systems, self-propelled guns, BTR-82A armored personnel carriers, and anti-tank missile systems.

Last Thursday, the Defense Ministry announced the multi-billion plan to increase its share of modern weaponry to 70 percent by 2020. The project will include purchasing 100 ships, over 600 aircraft and 1,000 helicopters under a 2011-2020 arms procurement program.

The arms procurement spending plan for 2011-2020 was sent to the government in December 2010. Approximately a quarter of the total budget will go on Russia's long under-funded navy as part of the modernization of the armed forces.
