HIMACHAL, INDIA (BNO NEWS) -- More than 30 wedding guests were killed on Wednesday evening when a truck carrying more than 40 people plunged down a ravine in northern India, local media reported.

The Press Trust of India news agency cited Transport Minister Mohinder Singh as saying that 34 people were killed when a truck carrying 40 members of a marriage party crashed down a 500 meters (1,640 feet) deep gorge near the village of Sherhpur in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, a state in northern India.

Singh said 32 people were pronounced dead at the scene while two others died of their injuries at a local hospital. All the victims were identified as men who had just attended a wedding.

India is often the scene of deadly road accidents, many of which are attributed to reckless driving, aging vehicle and overloading. In new figures released last year, India overtook China to top the world in road fatalities.

In early January, nearly two dozen people were killed when a tour bus overturned and fell into a gorge in northern India. It happened near the village of Shiv Mandir in Uttarakhand state, not far from the state's capital of Dehradun.
