100 Thai workers evacuated from Libya arrived on Sunday

A total of 101 Thai workers arrived home early Sunday from Libya as fierce fighting between forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi and anti-government protesters continued.

Jeerasak Sukonthachart, director general of Employment Department, told reporters that about 1,000 Thai workers are scheduled to return home Sunday. So far a total of 4,771 workers have returned to Thailand.

About 5,000 Thai workers are still stranded in Libya and they would return home daily on a gradual basis, as the evacuation process is expected to complete on March 15, Jeerasak said.

However, approximately 100 Thai workers prefer to stay there as they believe they are living in areas which are safe enough for them.

Returning workers are entitled to receive Bt1,500 each for their travelling expense to return home upcountry and were eligible to apply for another Bt15,000 in cash assistance from the Thai overseas workers fund.
