A footballer in Argentina's second division was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery after being shot by a policeman during a riot at the Mendoza city derby.

San Martin were trailing Godoy Cruz 3-0 in the B Nacional tournament when the San Martin fans began to throw stones and tried to enter the pitch.

As police tried to stop the unruly supporters from running onto the field, one fired his gun and Carlos Azcurra was shot in the chest.

He was taken to the Lagomaggiore Hospital in Mendoza city for the operation and is now listed in serious condition.

The match was stopped following the incident.

There was one a few years ago, where the fans got hold of the ref, who had given a dodgy decision, and put burning tyres round his neck. Funny, how it's still the Brit yobs who still hit the headlines though

No accident,I saw it on TV and it was shocking.

Saw it too, I think he was trying to get the cops to stop shooting at the crowd, cop turned around and shot him point blank in the chest with fat sized rubber bullet/ball. The cop, maybe, thought he was attacked from behind by a fan....

Let me add something that you didn't write .

The player have been shot by a policeman with "rubber bullet". That is why he didn't die because the policeman aren't allowed to use real bullet .

IMO , there are a lot of idiot policeman like that here , he shoudn't have shoted.

I don't think it's a case of an idiot policeman but of one who lost his cool. I know I'd be sh*tting nickels if I was a policeman in the middle of a stadium with thousands of rioters heading towards me from all sides.

I'd rather take on a bull in the arena... no tight and shiny pants though.
