BENIN, NIGERIA (BNO NEWS) -- Fourteen people were killed in southern Nigeria on Tuesday evening when a passenger bus crashed head-on into a truck, local media reported on Thursday.

The Vanguard newspaper reported that the accident happened at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday on a road between the cities of Benin and Ore in Edo State. It involved a commercial bus which was heading towards Onitsha in Anambra State.

According to the newspaper report, the accident happened when the bus attempted to overtake a truck by driving onto the other side of the road, causing it to crash into an oncoming truck.

Vanguard said fourteen people on the bus were killed, while five others sustained injuries and were transported to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. The fatalities were identified as six females and eight males.

Hours before the accident, a Benin city official appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to speed up a road project in an effort to stop frequent accidents along the road.
