Pakistani nabbed for traveller's cheque scam

BANGKOK: -- A Pakistani man has been arrested for allegedly cashing stolen traveller's cheques at leading hotels in Bangkok, police said.

Tourist Police commander Maj-General Panya Mamen said Muhammad Ali Malik was arrested at 5pm on Wednesday in front of The Mall department store's Ramkhamhaeng branch following complaints from the Thai Hotels Association.

He said the association's complaints said Malik had used stolen cheques to draw cash on several occasions, forging the signatures.

Panya quoted Malik as saying that he had bought the stolen cheques from a gang led by an Arab man.

He said Malik had used a fake passport and false signature to cash the cheques.

He said the owners of the cheques had filed complaints with police, but the hotels did not know that the cheques had been stolen.

Surapong Techaruwijit, a representative of the hotel association, said hotels should cross-check with the banks issuing the cheques to find out whether they had been stolen.
