What Do You Feel Are The Differences Between Farangs And Thais?

Like many posters here, I rarely use mine at all, for fear of wearing it out.

I would have thought that was obvious....

If you'd used your eyes you would have noticed that I have already pointed out this unfortunate truth.

That's why we Americans love to fight other people's wars for them.

To teach our youth geography.

Oh dear!!! World look out!!! don't you realise that if you adopt this type of philosophy to teach your American children geography you would be party to destroying 95% of the world or in simple mathematical terms (the world - America) as surely they know where their own country appears on the map!!! Don't they!!!!.

I suppose it would be a good way to lower the united states unemployment rate as it would take an increase of several million more new armed force personnel to police it all and be a logistical nightmare in deployment and operational terms, although a 100 fold increase in 3 star generals should overcome that element.

Heh, i've got a good idea - why not improve the teaching of geography in you're schools to show them that other countries exist outside of the USA and that there are other continents apart from 'the America's' NB: there are seven continents if you treat North America and South America as separate continents (of which I'm sure would garner much favouratism as that would mean that they would have 2 out of the 7 with the title America within them) and then look to find other means of getting the employment levels up!!!!! What do you think???

It's easier just to watch TV to see where were fighting. Saves time.

Did you really use the phrase "Oh dear!"?

Mom, is that you?

I know this stepping on a hornet's nest that I might regret, but I'm actually really interested in the whole hypothesis of a genetic component of intelligence.

I should preface this by saying I do not think Thais are less intelligent than farangs, and that I fully accept that methods of testing of IQ can be hugely culturally biased, and that nutritional, sociological and economic conditions massively affect the results of IQ testing in different populations.

I do not know whether different ethnic groups have different IQs that are partially genetically determined. However I can't think of a good scientific reason why this may not be so. After all we all accept that different ethnic groups have different statures, and that this is determined at least in part, genetically. However much you fed a population of pygmies their average stature would not increase to that of a semi-starved group of Norwegians. In principle if there was a genetic variant of a gene that (this is a purely made up example) caused neurons in the brain to make on average 5% fewer connections, and this variant arose say in Iceland, 50,000 years ago, wouldn't it be possible for Icelanders to be less intelligent than , say Thais because more of them have this variant?

Of course to see if populations of different ethnicity really do differ in IQ genetically you would have to do giant, prohibitively expensive and well controlled studies. I don't think we know the answer. Some people regard this hypothesis as intrinsically racist for laudable and understandable reasons. My question is why couldn't it be at least a possibility?

Unless thought and intelligence is an emergent property of brains that is not dependent on the physical structure of those brains, but is the same in every human regardless, or no physical /chemical differences in people's brains caused by genetic variation can exist that are capable of affecting intelligence, isn't it at least a possibility?

I'm taking the distinctly unusual step of quoting MYSELF here.

"as surely they know where their own country appears on the map!!! Don't they!!!!".

I've just seen Jazzbo's posting on Miss South Carolina's classic speech and the fact that apparently 20% of Americans cannot locate where the USA lies on the world map (you know, where they preside)!!! incredible and disturbing!!!. I must apologise for talking their intelligence up so much as they don't merit it, clearly. I would have thought that the saying "beauty without brains" could qualify her distnct absense of 'grey matter' but it looks like she is representative of a sizeable proportion of "teen America" - I'm totally dumbfounded!!!

Thats not a fact. Its an assumption.

And we reside in America. We don't preside there. Unless your using it in the context of being in charge of the place, which we are.

If you believe in evolution then it stands to reason that different races have evolved different intelligences because of their particular environment.

If you believe in God then you are more likely to assume all races are created equal.

UNICEF claimed earlier this year that British children were among the unhappiest and unhealthiest in Europe. They are more likely to binge-drink, take drugs, have sex at a young age and start fights.

The IPPR report adds to recent disturbing evidence that Britain is among the worst places to grow up in the developed world.

BBC and Daily Mail report, “Out-of-control' British teens the worst behaved in Europe”

Its study found that 44 per cent of British youngsters had been involved in a physical fight in the previous year - against just 28 per cent in Germany, 36 per cent in France and 38 per cent in Italy.

Some 38 per cent confessed to under-age sex, almost double the French figure. The same percentage had tried cannabis, more than five times the rate in Sweden.

I'm sorry, but what on earth have all these statistics got to do with the American youth's abyssmal knowledge of geography (in relation to where the location of different countries lie on a world map).

As your data shows that Britain tops all of the lists you have painstakingly compiled, does this not show that we (a small nation such as ours) are "world leaders"!!!! I see that you haven't included America in these tables or related the gun crime statistics comparing the US of A to Britain, or obesity levels, suicide levels etc: - I wonder why not??

If, as I think, you may just be trying to portray, by trashing (you should understand this American word) GREAT Britain - to give it it's full name, you are insinuating that Britain is not a healthy and happy place to live in with loose morals and bad behaviour amongst our peoples, then all that tells me is that I'm a clever so-and-so for uprooting and moving to Thailand!!! so thanks for that indirect (unintended I'm sure) compliment!!!

Now you've mentioned the word preside - 'someone who occupies a position of authority' or 'act as chairman or president' I would like to compliment you (as a nation) in you're impressive choices over recent years of leaders such as 'Dear Ronnie' and the two Bushes to preside over you're nations interests and interfere with all the other nations in the world's interests simply to serve you're OWN interests . We musn't forget all of the Presidents of the banks who presided over the global economic destruction either. We have so much to thank America for, clearly!!!! So thanks Guy's, how can we repay you're selfless generosity!!!!??????:annoyed: We owe so much to you yanks.

Since this thread is about Farangs and Thais I assumed you were not talking about Americans specifically and you meant that you were astounded by the lack of education, common knowledge and sorry state of Farang youth in general. I agree and added that British youth in the opinion of many as reported by BBC and the Guardian are the worst in Europe. I mentioned British youth because there are more of them in Thailand than any other Farang group that I know of.

I don't know if Britain is a healthy or happy place to live or not. UNICEF claimed earlier this year that British children were among the unhappiest and unhealthiest in Europe. They are more likely to binge-drink, take drugs, have sex at a young age and start fights.

If I had an opinion I would have stated it. From the amount of Brits I speak to in Thailand they all tell me that their home country is going to heck and they are much happier in Thailand.

Sorry, I should have pointed out in my posting (you know, the one you replied to, well kind of) that I was referring to the South Carolina in America and not in........!!

I imagined that you would also associate the several referrals of America, USA used in my posting to be the same as you're USA and America . Silly me!!

So America is fine and dandy, is it!!! Sure isn't the way I see it - there again you've shown to me that it is easy to confuse your America with the other one and your's might be paradise on earth, for all I know!!!!:)

we only use a small portion of our brain.

I haven't actually been able to find the post where Ian states this, so for this reason I want to point out that I am by no means holding Ian accountable for the statement itself.

From a strict biological perspective, "we only use 10 or 20% of our brain" is an urban legend. However, it only takes reading a few threads on this forum before it becomes obvious that it is in fact true.

Not going after Ian but just want confirm that I wasn't making it up:

IanForbes, on 2011-03-19 00:29:11, said:

Most of us never reach our full potential when it comes to intelligence and we only use a small portion of our brain. That boils it all down to "street smarts"... which is being able to adapt to our environment. I've met all sorts of book smart people who don't have a clue how to get along in the world, and even less in an unfriendly environmentsnapback.png

Oh, and thanks for the welcome and the compliment (facetious or not!)

Reply to SchonSteve,

British youth, American youth not much difference. Messed up values, misdirected priorities. Brits are a bit more likely to get drunk and in fights Americans more likely to have auto accidents and get shot.

Who are the happier kids? Brits, American or Thais? Thais by a long shot.

Especially Thai boys. What's not to like? Cheap booze, beautiful women and lots of rock and roll and you can bribe the college instructors. I would have killed for that when I was 19.

Don't get me wrong I don't think Thailand is a place for Western young men. It destroys work ethic, discipline and accumulation of wealth.

Besides if you live here when you are young there will be nothing to look forward to when you get old. They are supposed to be the golden years after a hard life of working. I think working and marrying and having a family in the West is necessary to really appreciate the benefits of Thailand and enables one to put up with it's minor flaws.

Ah, you are starting to make some sense now!! I agree that their values (both the British and American kids) are messed up more so than Thai's, mainly because they are spoilt in comparison and have far too many distractions in life which in turn makes it far too comfortable for them in their early years and brings with it certain detrimental consequences as a result, later in life.

One thing they teach in Thailand (I have first hand experience of this as my wife and I are private kindergarten owners and I do a bit of (very part time) English teaching in our school) and that is the discipline and respect given to all of the teachers (and their parents incidentally) is in another league. I'm convinced its to do with their buddhist upbringing!!! What we say is gospel and they do not question it, full stop. I don't think this is so in either of our countries, I'm sure you'll agree.

I know for a fact that Thai (lets call them teenagers) do not engage in those things you've stipulated ie: sex, drugs and R&R, this is not to say that this won't change/come later in life. ALL Thai men LIKE to drink cheap whiskey and smoke cheap cigarettes and quite a number have a penchant for the ladies (their wives AND girlfriends), that I do know!!

Not quite. More to do with Confucianism and other cultural factors than (the Thai version of) Buddhism, per se. Besides shows of respect are often just that - a show, ie a matter of form.

What you say is "gospel"? To the extent that that is true (and you won't know because again, the deference they show is first and foremost about show -- even when they do believe virtually everything you say as some may do); but that's also simply because they are typically taught all their lives to not not to question authority or think for themselves (which is NOT particularly Buddhist -- arguably rather the contrary); you think that's a good thing?

I

You know no such thing "for a fact" -- because it isn't one. And :ALL Thai men LIKE to drink cheap whiskey and smoke cheap cigarettes?"

Are you for real?!

Talking about the youths of the various countries is a convenient way to avoid addressing the fuc_ked-up world the adult population has created. The "f" word is now used by everyone in real life and on Thai and Western TV so it is no longer banned by humanity even though it discomforts some puritans and hypocrites who should probably not be members of TV. And it really does describe what we have left our offspring. If the word is unpleasent it does not hold a candle to the current state of the world that our young people are growing up in. No jobs, housing defaults, bankruptcies, unemployment, benefit cuts, debts for the next 1,000 years. Not to mention the corruption, the top 1% of the money holders controlling the world, the untouchables, and all the other pleasantries of our real world. Don't let words disgust you, take disgust in things that matter!

dam_n Steve- What did some American do to you to make you hate 300 million people?

I like the British. Not terribly faithful to us "Yanks" but dam_n obedient that's for sure.

I DON'T hate the American people. I think that they are very affable, highly charitable and sincere in nature. If you speak about the American way of life and your apparent obsession in trying to lecture everyone else that their way is best and nobody else's counts or matters, then that is a different story!!!

One of the traits of the British (good or bad, you tell me) is to defend themselves to the last ie: If attacked we attack back with added venom - come to think of it the American ideology is not so dissimilar, maybe we are a little bit better at doing this this than you are though!!!

Why do you intimate that we are unfaithful as it seems to me that we are your main (sometimes soul) ally in these arguments with the world such as in Iraq and Afghanistan. There's that "special relationship" too so your argument to this effect is not very convincing!!/

I don't know what to make of your last retort about obedience - I hope its not implying that we should be obedient to America cos that will really get my hackles up,.and I will go for it.

With regards to “IQ” - you have to make several leaps of faith just to accept that intelligence is a concrete concept and then that it is measurable

Firstly no-one has satisfactorily defined what “intelligence is - I don’t mean on the is thread - I mean anywhere ever.

Then how do you measure something that is largely subjective?

As humans we don’t get born fully formed and start going about are business - we are a species of mammal that relies more than any other on “nurture” and “learning” to develop before we go off on our own

As for “Race” well genetically that’s a fallacy - a 2% change in your genetics and you’d be a chimpanzee.

THe most remarkable thing about humans as a species is the LACK of genetic variation compared to other species. (There are some interesting theories as to why it appears that we come from such a small gene pool)

As for the idea that “IQ” tests are biased to “western” culture - well those who expound racist theories connected with IQ actually put East Asia at the top of the pile.

(you might want to look up the reasons and flawed logic in creating a hierarchical structure based on an unstable concept - IQ)

dam_n Steve- What did some American do to you to make you hate 300 million people?

I don't know what to make of your last retort about obedience - I hope its not implying that we should be obedient to America cos that will really get my hackles up,.and I will go for it.

whistling.gif Yep, you did a great job with Dunkirk. Great strategy, letting the Germans give it to you,and kick you off the mainland. The best part is were you lured them into wasting munitions bombing your families for 3 yrs then waiting for help. If it wasn't for the opportunity to trade nylon stockings and chocolate bars for sex, we should have let the Russians finish the heavy lifting.

My countries biggest flaw is we believe in Europe. We cannot admit that we are despised in Europe much like we are in the Middle East. That trust is our achilles heel. Our silly belief that a common language accounts for anything.

Were already betrayed on personal levels. This post is evidence, and soon we will be betrayed on a national level. Im sure the British will sell secrets to the Chinese, maybe even the Russians if enough money is involved. So with that, there isn't much difference between a Thai and a farang.

I'm not implying that you SHOULD be obedient. Just you simply are, and that is your source of hatred.

Not sure what hackles are, but what you do with them is up to you.

Great troll post. Bound to upset a lot of people.

Well done. Should avoid any on-topic discussion until the thread is closed. I liked particularly the little reference back to topic, and the hackles humour.

That should be cut and pasted on every one of these topics that rants on about which country is better. :jap:

The British monarchy thought they could rule the world... and did so for a number of years, until their arrogance finally bit them in the butt. Then, it was the American's turn. They haven't been too badly bitten in the bum YET, but they are certainly taking their lumps.

The arrogant thinking that "my way is better than your way" will always cause problems when trying to enforce it on other countries... such as Thailand. China is the smart one. They are using their people like pawns in a chess game. They don't care how many they lose in the process, or in what manner. Kill off a million or two of their own citizens and what does it matter? The population will always replace the ones that are lost. The Chinese have a goal and that is to take over the world economy... just as the American power brokers tried, but, the Chinese leaders don't worry about taking care of their own people. They focus on the end result. The American leaders, just as the British leaders before them, don't really care about the people, either, but they are forced by democratic policies to follow at least SOME semblance of honesty. The Chinese are under no restrictions at all and can do as they wish. They don't HAVE to use military might against foreign countries. Instead, they use the economy to gain their ends.
