Since buying is out for foreigners, if one wishes to rent a place somewhere surrounded by many undeveloped rai, how would you go about finding it? The more in the middle of nowhere, the better. Open to the North/NE, but have no idea on how to get started looking. I understand issues with security, utilities, and access and have plans to meet such challenges. I just don't know how to get started on such an endeavor. Is there such a thing as up country real estate agents that can assist with remote abodes?

The other issue is I don't want a house like I often see which is little more than a dilapidated chicken coup. So I also wonder if it is practical to look for the possibility of building a decent Thai style house on a suitable rental property. Any advice appreciated.

I assume that you are able to speak Thai, as if you don't it would be impossible for you to live in an area such as you seek.

Find an area that you would like to stay and ask in the local market or shop if anyone knows of a house to rent. Most village areas have empty houses where the owner is working away and are available to rent.

The type of house that would be considered minimum standard for a Farang would start at 500 Baht per month and topping at around 4000Baht.

For 500 Baht house, expect to pay out about 100,000 to make comfortable and 100,000 for furnishings.

Obviously, if you are paying out to improve somebody else's property, you will want a contract, so you will need a lawyer. First thing to check is that the person renting has the right to rent it, is the owner and the land has chanot(deeds).

The other option is to lease some land for 30 years (lawyer again) and build your own house. A good quality house could cost 1,000,000 Baht, although can be done for less. A good builder will have government issued plans for some typical houses, with all the dimensions and specifications for building the houses. These plans also indicate the maximum cost for building these houses.

As loong suggests you will find land and property in most villages if you ask. Problem you will find with your requirements is services to the property. Presume you want electric, water, road, etc. It will probably cost more to build a decent thai house than a modern bungalow. I priced both and my 3 bed bungalow only cost 500,000 baht to build!

Hello, I don't know what you think about chiang mai. My friends has a couple of areas to choose from, and you can also choose your own design. This means you can choose the area where you live, which can be a quiet, riverside place, with a lot of nature, or a place more close to the city.

They have a few excisting houses for sale right now, and have a website. But these might not be the houses that you like. Therefore they also have an option to choose your own design.
