My Thai friend has lived in the UK for 10 years. She married a UK citizen, obtained a visa & came to the UK, she now holds a UK passport.

She was previously married to a Thai citizen in Thailand. This marriage was subsequently dissolved by mutual consent at the Ampur.

She has the divorce certificate as issued by the Ampur but was wondering what became of the marriage certificate for her first marriage? She has searched high and low but cant find it at home.

Is it the case that when an uncontested divorce takes place in Thailand, the marriage certificate must be surrendered?

If she wanted to obtain a copy of the marriage certificate, how easily could this be obtained given she is in the UK?

The methods for obtaining a duplicate of a mislaid Thai marriage certificate if living outside of Thailand are not that simple.

Only 2 ways I know of doing this:

1. Visit Thailand and apply for a duplicate marriage certificate at the amphur where the marriage was registered.

2. Hire the services of a lawyer in Thailand to apply for a copy of your friend`s marriage certificate on her behalf. But this could cost you a truck load of cash for the lawyer`s services.

You may find that the registry offices will not deal with any third party members of the public unless it`s a lawyer or someone of official capacity.
