September 21, 200520 yr Just a quick note of warning to all who are in or about to go to Bangkok... I just found out today that 13,500 baht was taken illegally from my bank account last week whilst I was in Bangkok. I was there visiting the Mrs and it appears that my card has been skimmed whilst using an ATM !! So now Im unsure if the bank will refund the money... I wouldnt mind but I always check to see if the bank looks OK, on this occassion I used my card in an ATM but it told me I had unsufficient funds in my account and bounced me. Strange I thought since Id just been paid... So I tried again and the same thing happened. Hence, today I found out that on that same day my card was used 7 time in the same ATM !! All for relatively small amounts of 500Bht up to 4500 Bht! Just a note for anyone to beware if this happens to them. Im in hope that the bank will refund me, we shall see..... Not a huge amount of money but it kind of puts a sour taste in your mouth though Edited September 21, 200520 yr by falangaman
September 21, 200520 yr My friend has just returned from Thailand and his credit card was skimmed in a travel agents when booking a Thai Airways flight to Bangkok. When returning to the UK he found his card had been used in Korea!!! to the amount £1,600!!! The insurance covered the costs and then told it was common place in Thailand now. ATM should now display stickers stating to be careful and look for devices placed over the card slot. Be careful the devil is out there! Edited September 21, 200520 yr by lopburiguy
September 22, 200520 yr What was the name of travel agent? What was the location of the ATM? Edited September 22, 200520 yr by WhiteShiva
September 22, 200520 yr This happened to me this time last year. I had just arrived to live in LOS. My bank gave me back all the money within 2 weeks. THank God. Same thing happened to my dad in January this year. He's not sure where it got skimmed but was used in Malaysia. He too got his money back. Yeah, it does happen a lot. The interesting thing is Visa don't really seem to be doing much abt it. Not that hard to set up a few dud accounts and try back tracking on statements with people who have done this. Carl
September 22, 200520 yr To avoid or minimize this i have more than one account. A few without ATM access but with internet banking, the other the opposite. I book small amount from one to the other. Never had a problem, but you never know when it will happen. At least the risk is a lot smaller.

Carl <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Visa and Mastercard (plus defunct Eurocard) have mandated the use of the EMV chips for a while now, but takeup has been slow. Once the ATMs read the chip on the card (and will not be allowed to fall back to the mag stripe) then skimming will be a thing of the past. Shame the banks are so slow with the ATM software to implement.
October 14, 200520 yr What do these card skimmers look like? I tend to only bank at sub-branches (in Carrefour, Lotus, etc.) so I don't think I'm at risk of someone daring enough to install a skimmer at these locations, but one never knows.
