At least 14 killed in ambushed Pakistani paramilitary convoy

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A militant ambush against a paramilitary convoy in the northwestern region of Pakistan resulted in the death of at least 14 troops, officials said Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the restive Akakhel tribal region near the Afghan border in the Bara sub-division in Khyber Agency when Frontier Corps (FC) personnel were returning to their base after conducting a search operation in the Sipah area, a senior security officer told Pakistan's Express Tribune.

According to the media's sources, the paramilitary convoy consisted of three vehicles, which was attacked with mortars as it traveled through the Meelwat area from the Aziz checkpoint. Among the fatal victims were two senior officials.

FC troops had reportedly just arrested around 170 tribesmen for their suspected links with the militants in an operation in the Sipah Yousaf Talab area of Bara on Monday afternoon. The arrested also reportedly had links with the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.
