BAGHDAD (BNO NEWS) -- Two American service members were shot and killed in Iraq on Saturday, the U.S. military confirmed on Sunday, but few details were immediately released.

A statement from U.S. Forces - Iraq said two U.S. service members died on Saturday as a result of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with indirect fire. It did not say where the attack took place.

"The names of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin and release by the Department of Defense," the statement said, adding that the incident is being investigated. Other details were not immediately released.

The fatalities raise the total number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq so far this year to 13, according to a BNO News count based on official information. A total of 60 U.S. service members were killed in Iraq last year, most of whom died as the result of non-hostile incidents.
