Big Size Clothes In Chang Mai

There used to be a specialist clothing shop (name not known) for fat oversized people on the ground floor of the Airport Plaza near to the Tops supermarket.

This is not one of those export/import places. This was about a year ago, not sure if it is still there. Worth a look if you do visit the Airport Plaza.

My advice is, avoid those export/import clothing shops, the goods are total crap.

They don`t wash very well, the color comes out and they shrink on the first go.

The shop in Airport central is called DR Zuu's and they make clothes from size L up to 8XL. The clothes from there are alot better than the export shops, like you say they usually tend to stock a load of crap.

If you go into Airport Central on the ground floor there's a shop just past the Body Glove store called IBIS. It is a bit like one of the export shops but their stock constantly changes and is mostly branded items. The prices are much cheaper than the other shop usually but you do have to pop in on the right day to get the sizes and bargains you would like. No consistancy with the stock means you need to be lucky. They always have shorts & Jeans though.

It's worth having a look in on your way down to the shop near Topps every time you go down that way. Last time I was in I bought two pairs of Dockers brand jeans at 280 Baht a pair, the other shop usually start around 500 Baht upwards.

Depends what kind of larger size clothes you want. Those Export shops in the malls (there's one in KSK, too) are good for men's cargo shorts and Dockers pants. Always try them on; they may not been correctly labeled as to size. Also carefully check for flaws in workmanship; these goods are factory seconds.

For men's shirts and all manner of women's clothes the best way to get clothes that fit and are exactly what you want is to have one of Chiang Mai's talented dressmakers make clothes for you. I've finally converted Hubby to the joy of having clothes that really, really fit. He just had my dressmaker whip up half a dozen shirts for him. They actually fit just right in the shoulders, but are roomy enough in the tummy. No more shirts tht look sloppy because the shoulders are too big!

Big C has upstairs an Export shop.

You can find some Baby size XXL there, also a few real mens sizes of 4 XL.

I get my underwear from there, they have a large pile and you just have to go through them to find staff always help, B59 and most last over a year.

There are also a few large size shirts I have had one Denim for over 4 years worn say once every couple of weeks.

Got a decent Van Huesan top there last week.

Would you mind me asking whom you use for having women's clothing made? I would love to find a good dressmaker in Chiang Mai. I don't necessarily trust that a tailor who does primarily menswear will be equally good at properly fitting a woman's body, especially a woman with curves.

My dressmaker is Khun Noi on Sirimankalajarn Rd, which is the road that's parallel to Nimmanheiman and just east of it. If you're coming from KSK, it's the "T" intersection with a traffic light, just before the Nimmanheiman/SuperHighway/Huey Kaew nightmare intersection.

She's on the west side of Sirimankalajarn (the right side after you turn off Huey Kaew). Her shop just is south of a Thai eatery that's open just during the day and two or three doors north of the Apple Iphone shop. She doesn't have a sign, but her shop has a multi-pane glass door that recently replaced the metal roll-up door. She has a wood door, with a window. Just knock on it. She lives there. She doesn't speak a word of English, but works very well with gestures, drawings, photos of what you'd like and clothing from friends you'd like her to copy for you. She makes clothes for many of the ladies in my circle and everyone first came to Khun Noi thru a personal meeting arranged by one of her current clients. I don't know of anyone that just walked off the street and asked her to sew for them. Send me a PM if you'd like to get together for me to lead you there.

First you can arrange a meeting to discuss what you'd like for her to make and she'll tell you how many meters of fabric you'll need to buy. Then you return with your fabric and notions, if you want specific buttons, trim etc. Otherwise, she uses very plain buttons and no trim. She has given up on me buying lining material after I made a particularly bad choice, but I think it's costing me more than the cost of lining and song thaew fare when I ask her to purchase the lining for an item.

The set-up of the place has always given Hubby the willies and he has ordered some shirts from one of the Indian tailors, where they speak English, have aircon and you select the fabric in the shop. Fortunately, I was able to convince him to join me on a fabric shopping trip to Warorot, on the one of the rainy, cloudy days in March. No customers in the fabric shop and he got with the program, buying enough fabric for six shirts, at a fraction of the price of the ones from an Indian tailor.

Oh Nancy.......if only all posters (including me) would give such exact directions when recommending a place. thumbsup.gif

My dressmaker. . .

Thank you so much. You always offer the best and most detailed information. I'm not in Chiang Mai yet (arriving June 1), but would love to take you up on your very kind offer once I arrive and start to figure out what I need. As a bonus, your dressmaker is located very close to where I'll be staying.
