News_Editor Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 UK Royal Navy serviceman shot dead alongside nuclear submarine 2011-04-09 05:53:37 GMT+7 (ICT) SOUTHAMPTON (BNO NEWS) -- A British Royal Navy serviceman on Friday was shot dead by another service member on the docks alongside a nuclear submarine in Southampton, England. "Two Royal Navy personnel have been involved in a firearms incident at Southampton docks where HMS Astute is alongside. Sadly, one has now died as a result of his injuries," said a Ministry of Defense (MOD) spokesman. The two servicemen were shot by a third Royal Navy serviceman who was later arrested by Hampshire Constabulary police. The shooting incident was not terrorist-related and no civilians were injured. "I am greatly saddened to hear of this tragic incident and of the death of a Royal Navy serviceman. It is right and proper that a full police investigation is carried out and allowed to take its course," said Defense Secretary Liam Fox. "We are co-operating fully with the police investigation and a Royal Navy Service investigation will begin in due course," said the MOD spokesman. Jeremy Moulton, Deputy Leader of Southampton City Council, offered his sincere condolences to the families of the Royal Navy personnel directly affected for the docks incident. "The visit of HMS Astute to Southampton is a matter of pride and excitement for many in the city and we are deeply saddened by today's events," added Councilor Moulton. The HMS Astute nuclear submarine docked in Southampton last Wednesday. The vessel arrived for a five-day official visit. Earlier this day, a tour was given on board to local potential recruits. -- © BNO News All rights reserved 2011-04-09
