Mubarak regime strongman arrested for recent Tahrir Square clashes

CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- Egypt's military on Sunday arrested a prominent member of ousted President Hosni Mubarak's party for instigating the recent violent clashes in Cairo's Tahrir Square, Ahram Online reported.

Business tycoon Ibrahim Kamel was taken to Tora prison, where a host of other Mubarak regime top officials are being held, after the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces ordered ‎his arrest. He was remanded in custody for 15 days, pending investigation into charges of instigating violent clashes between demonstrators and army forces early Saturday morning. 
    


The ruling military council said three Kamel's followers, who were at Tahrir Square past curfew, are also wanted for bullying and terrorizing civilians.  

On Saturday, hundreds of Egyptians defied soldiers who tried to disperse them from Tahrir Square and vowed to keep protesting until ex-President Mubarak is tried and other demands met. At least one person was killed, 71 injured, and 42 arrested.

Ibrahim Kamel is considered to be responsible for ordering attacks on peaceful protesters, including the attack by camel and horse-back hooligans wielding swords and cudgels, during the protests that toppled the Egyptian regime. According to authorities, approximately a dozen former ministers and businessmen are under investigation for corruption or abuse of authority.

The military council took control of Egypt after Mubarak, who led Egypt as president for three decades, stepped down after weeks of anti-government protests by crowds calling for greater democracy and respect of human rights.
