Hi all...

I have been visiting Bumrungrad Hospt for my chkups and i am now soon approching my due date. Was a bit confused about the rates that the hospt is charging for my scheduled C Section . I have heard its a fixed package for both thais as well as expats ( residents working here in Bkk). But after a visit to Phaya Thai 2 found out that they were ready to negotiate the price from 62k (c section rate for a expat) to 39k which is usually the rate local thai if the delivery was done there.

Bumrungrad lately is charging appox 65k for a C section and claim it to be a fixed package under a standard room service . By any chance is it negotiable ? Has anyone got a thai package as such there ?.Also they will charge 500 thb additional for the birth registration work translation where as its free at Phaya Thai too ... any leads for negotiation at Bumrungrad ? Thanks in advance :):jap:

I have never heard of them negotiating a lower than advertised package rate. on the other hand, plenty of reports of charges coming to more than expected based on package rates. Check carefully what is covered..often there are many exclusions, like medications etc, which add up.

As Sheryl said, there are often costs not included with a package.

As a comparison, a straight forward delivery, no package natural birth at Samtivej 2 years ago cost us around 130,000 from memory. One night stay and nothing special, as we'd done it all before.

From memory, a C-Section would have cost us 20K more. I guess you could use 150K as a worst case scenario.

Phaya thai 2, dont have any package for the visits, its pay as they charge, we spent 3 hours last time because the line at the ultra sound was quite backed up and I am sure the figure they gave us for delivery is a bit higher than 39K. The monthly visits are a lot higher that the package from phayathai 1.

yes ..Phayathai 1 is more cheaper than phaya 2 , phayathai 1 has given me a package of 31k for the c - section compared to 39k at phaya thai 2

also what add ons should i discuss @ bumrungrad ??? plz advice :whistling:

Ask them specifically what charges are not included in the package rate:

?medications given while in the hospital?

Anesthetic and anesethetist fee?

Meals?

?medical supplies

?lab tests

Etc. Somewhere there should be some fine print telling you what is not included.

For sure, treatment of any complications, blood transfusion etc won't be covered. knock on wood, won't be necessary either. But I bet there will be other things that will be "outside" the package price.

Hello Nisha,

At Bumrungrad I can confirm that we do not have separate pricing for our Thai, expat or international patients. We believe that a two tier pricing structure based on race or demographic is not best for our patients or us. And our package rates are not negotiable, we have already done our "internal negotiations" to get this pricing.

What Sheryl said is correct - you do have to review the package details to understand what is included and what is not. On top of this, if you are comparing packages between hospitals, you have to compare what is in these packages item by item, as what is included can be very different hospital to hospital.

For simple cases, my understanding is that you should expect to pay about THB 5,000 or a bit more above the package price in other items and services. Potentially up to THB 15,000, but to my understanding this should be rare. In the case of real complications, the pricing can completely vary, depending on the seriousness of the complication.

If you are making the decision simply on cost alone, it is true that giving birth under normal circumstances is going to be pretty much the same at the hospitals, mainly dependent on the doctor's TLC. Of course at Bumrungrad there is the additional service & pampering, garden level maternity floor, etc. However, beyond the cost of the delivery, you should also look into comparing the hospital's ability to deal with complications if they arise, both for you and your baby.

Best regards,

Scott @ Bumrungrad

Dear Scott :

One more thing that i would like to ask u ...the 65k standard package wouldnt include the garden level rooms right ?

Hi Nisha,

Yes, that price includes 3 nights stay on the garden level. The 6th floor Main Hospital building (the garden level) is our maternity floor. Unfortunately, the garden is only on one side of the building. When you book your appointment and stay, you can request to be on the actual garden side. Of course, it depends on availability. :(

Best regards,

Scott @ Bumrungrad

Have also seen some very favorable reviews on Samitivej, especially for people wanting things like father in delivery room, rooming-in etc.

With all hospitals, the packages include specific things and do not include some things so you need to read the package "fine print" carefully.
