April 19, 201115 yr When I built my house I put in a raised flower bed along the back wall. Since that time I also planted bananas behind the fence opposite the wall. The bananas have grown huge and provide nice shade and tasty fruit so I want to keep them. I need suggestions as to what I can now plant in the flower bed as the house and banana plants block any direct sunlight.
April 19, 201115 yr ornamental? ferns and other shade loving plants. The Tacca is a cool looking plant that has done well in the shade under a big tree behind our place (until it got washed away in the floods ) coleus work pretty good in shade as well
April 19, 201115 yr Go to any nursery, and they will show you a wide variety of plants which don't like direct sunlight. A good guideline (though it doesn't always work) is that plants which live in the shade tend to have broad leaves... to catch as much light as they can. Flowers, if any, tend to be white or a pale colour.
April 22, 201115 yr If you are into kitchen/garden, a pepper plant will grow up a shaded wall quite nicely. A piece of useless information....in the days of yore , ounce for ounce, peppercorns cost more than gold. Regards.
