February 6 proposed as 'Muay Thai Day'

By The Nation

The Culture Ministry will next week propose to the Cabinet that February 6 of every year is declared Muay Thai Day, honouring the Ayutthaya-era king Somdet Phra Sanphet VIII, also known as Phra Chao Suea (Tiger King), as the father of Thai boxing.

Culture Minister Nipit Intarasombat said yesterday that after Muay Thai was registered as national heritage last year, the Office of the National Culture Commission also approved the proposal to make February 6 Muay Thai Day.

The International Federation of Muaythai Amateurs (IFMA) backed the idea, meaning 128 member countries could celebrate the martial art.

The date was selected based on the anniversary of Phra Chao Suea's coronation on February 6, 1702.

Phra Chao Suea was a Muay Thai fighter himself, promoting the martial art during his reign, which saw the emergence of many great boxers including Nai Khanomtom and Phraya Phichai Dap Hak, Nipit said.

All agencies thus agreed to establish Muay Thai Day on his coronation anniversary to honour Phra Chao Suea as the father of the martial art, he explained.

RED-SHIRT LEADERS HAVE 'VIOLATED BAIL CONDITION'

By Kesinee Taengkhio

The Nation

Transcripts of speeches made by nine red-shirt leaders at their April 10 rally clearly shows some of them committing lese majeste and violated their bail conditions, a prosecutor said yesterday.

Thanapit Mulpruek, director-general of the Special Litigation Department, said revocation of bail would not be requested for the others.

Pol Lt-Colonel Thawan Mangkang, the investigator at the Department of Special Investigation in charge of seeking bail withdrawal, said he had submitted the report of the Judge Advocate-Generals' Department on how the red-shirt leaders had breached Article 112 of the Criminal Code to support the request for re-incarceration.

The military department had also filed a complaint with Samran Raj Police Station.

Thanapit also said Methee Amornwutthikul, a former actor and red-shirt supporter, reported to him for suspected illegal possession of and carrying a firearm at the Khok Wua Intersection on April 10 last year.

However, the attorney had not finished studying his case and scheduled June 21 for him to hear the charges.

Malaria remains threat in border areas

By Pongphon Sarnsamak

The Nation

More than 2,000 people in Thailand were infected with malaria in the past three months, the Public Health Ministry said yesterday.

Malaria remains a threat in the deep South, especially Yala province, where the number of malaria cases has increased from 30 a year to 3,000 annually over the past several years because of the unrest in the area, Vector-Borne Disease Bureau director Dr Wichai Satimai said.

"Medical personnel could not enter villages to provide medicine and equipment to prevent infection, because of the unrest during the past few years," he said.

He was speaking at a workshop on malaria prevention and control for high-risk groups living along Thailand's borders.

He said the number of Thais diagnosed with malaria from January to March was 2,320. But when compared with the same period last year, the figure had decreased 44 per cent.

Meanwhile, the number of foreigners infected with malaria in Thailand this year was 3,220, a 19-per-cent decrease from the same period last year.

Last year, about 24,816 people were infected with malaria. Of this number, about 15,181 cases were people living along the Thailand-Burma border.

Dr Charles Delacollette, manager of the World Health Organisation's Mekong Malaria Programme, said he was worried about the spread of infection along the Thai-Burmese border, as the number of malaria cases in Burma had increased to more than 400,000 in 2009.

"If there is no collaboration between Thailand and Burma, they are going to fail in disease prevention," he said.

However, there is a declining interest among government and donors in malaria control and prevention.

Wichai said reductions to public health staff nationwide due to reorganisation of the health system and poor community participation and involvement had led to inadequate public awareness of the malaria problem.

Inflexibility in the malaria-surveillance system, which is unable to respond to changing situations, is another obstacle to controlling the disease, he said.

Police Set 100,000-baht Bounty for Cop Killer

Police are hunting down a suspect in the murder of a police station commander at his residence in Nakhon Sawan Province on Tuesday, with a bounty of 100,000 baht announced for information leading to his arrest.

An arrest warrant has been issued for 44 year old Narong Thongchai, infamously known as 'Parp the Killer of 100 Victims'.

Narong is the prime suspect in the murder of Police Colonel General Krerkrit Niyomserm in front of his home in Nakhon Sawan Province on Tuesday.

Krerkkit was a commander of Sai Ngarm police station in Kamphaeng Phet Province.

Police Major General Sirin Padungchewit, deputy commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 6, said the investigation team of local and Crime Suppression Division officers, led by Deputy Police Chief Police General Panupong Singhara, have begun their hunt for the alleged murderer.

Sirin said a 100,000 baht bounty is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Initial investigation found that bullet casings discovered at the crime scene matched those in other cases in Chonburi and Ratchaburi provinces in which Narong was also believed to have been involved in.

Police is looking into a business conflict among other possible motives behind this brutal killing as Krerkrit was extensively involved in the construction business.

However, Head of Nakhon Sawan Provincial Administration Manop Sripheung believe Krekrit's death was not linked to bidding of construction projects in the province.

Thailand sending two medical teams to Fukushima

BANGKOK, April 22 - Thailand will send two medical teams to help earthquake and tsunami victims in the Japanese city of Fukushima, as requested by the Japanese government, according to Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisit.

The health minister said the Thai medical team will work closely with their Japanese counterparts to provide health care to local residents and foreigners there who now face both sanitary and environmental problems, especially for the adults and children living in public shelters and vulnerable to illness and epidemic.

Mr Jurin said the ministry decided to dispatch two pediatricians and two nurses from Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health (QSNICH) to Fukushima after Japanese ambassador to Thailand Seiji Kojima informed the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the need of experts in this field.

The first team, consisting of one pediatrician and one nurse, will leave Thailand May 5 and stay in Japan until May 21, while the second team will be on mission from May 19 through June 4, said Mr Jurin.

The minister said the Thai nationals will work with medical teams from Fukushima Medical University. One team comprises a Thai doctor, a Thai nurse, a Japanese doctor, a Japanese nurse and one Japanese coordinator.

Mr Jurin stated each team will provide medical service for two weeks to victims now staying in temporary shelters. (MCOT online news)
