canopy Posted April 22, 2011 Share Posted April 22, 2011 I've got close to 100 fruit trees going with countless varieties of things, but one thing I have not found yet in Thailand is blueberries. It would be essential to get a low chill variety. And even then I am not totally sure the cool weather in the mountains where I am would necessarily meet the chill requirements year over year. None the less I wish to give that a shot as it is just a hobby. Anyone know if seeds or plants are sold anywhere or have additional information on suitability?Otherwise what I was thinking of doing was just taking a pack of frozen blueberries from Tesco and see what I can get by starting from that though wonder if they will be high chill or worse yet GE. But I'm NOT sure if this will work wirh supermarket bought blueberries...fresh organic or at least naturally grown berries would probably be better. I tried the link and it worked for me. There are also some related articles about growing Blueberry bushes and even how to get Blueberries from seeds grown on your plants. They are going to be hard to find in LOS, try alt. route. The UFL links are usually good, I use for toms and chilies. When you find the verity you want, do a search for who sells them. These seeds will actually produce new plants just as they do in the wild setting, slowly carpeting the area with new plants. Blueberries are cold weather plants and need a few months of freezing to break the seed dormancy. Replicate the natural setting of an acid soil and watch the tiny seedlings emerge. In the article they tell how to chill your blueberries in a fridge until that activates the seeds. If you don't do that the seeds won't start to grow. Blueberries are naturally a cold weather plant. I grew up in Massachusetts, up in the Berkshires near the Vermont border. The winter temperatures there are lower there any normal winter than anywhere you can find in Thailand. Blueberries NEED cold weather for their seeds to germinate properly. Nature planned it that way.
