Two U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq

2011-04-24 00:18:57 GMT+7 (ICT)

BAGHDAD (BNO NEWS) -- Two American soldiers were killed in southern Iraq, a military statement said Saturday.

"Two U.S. service members were killed yesterday (Friday) while conducting operations in southern Iraq," the statement said.

No more details were released.

The fatalities raise the total number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq so far this year to 15, according to a BNO News count based on official information. A total of 60 U.S. service members were killed in Iraq last year, most of whom died as the result of non-hostile incidents.

Less than 50,000 US troops remain in Iraq, eight years since the U.S.-led war began March 20, 2003. According to a security agreement between Baghdad and Washington, all U.S. forces will be withdrawn by the end of 2011.
