Four injured in clash between Hungarian far-right group and Roma

GYONGYOSPATA, HUNGARY (BNO NEWS) -- Four people were injured after a group of radical nationalists clashed with local Roma in a village in northern Hungary, MTI news agency reported Wednesday.

Clashes erupted late Tuesday after Vedero (Defense Force) uniformed paramilitaries threw stones at a house in a Roma neighbourhood in Gyongyospata. After the fight, several people were detained amid a heavy police presence.

Radical groups have staged demonstrations and patrols in several villages in Hungary's poor and unemployment-hit northern and north-eastern regions over the past few weeks to "restore public order."

On Friday, nearly 300 Roma women and children were transported out of Gyongyospata on buses provided by the Red Cross after Vedero announced it would set up a "defense training camp" in their neighbourhood. They returned to their homes after police arrested leaders of the group.

According to MTI, the situation remains tense, with police keeping members of both groups apart.
