Two al-Qaida leaders killed in southern Yemen

2011-05-06 03:33:18 GMT+7 (ICT)

SANAA, YEMEN (BNO NEWS) -- Two al-Qaida mid-level leaders were killed on Thursday in the southern Yemeni province of Shabwa, the state-run Saba news agency reported.

The two militants were identified as brothers Musaed and Abdullah al-Harad, and were killed while the security services were trying to hunt them, a security source said.

The source added that the brothers, who are among the dangerous elements of al-Qaida, were involved in several terrorist operations during the past period.

Last week, Yemeni security forces killed "one of the most dangerous elements of al-Qaida" in Aden province during clashes with police. Meanwhile, at least three soldiers were killed and four others were wounded on Sunday after an attack by suspected al-Qaida members in Yemen's southern province of Abyan.

Al-Qaida attacks against the army and the security forces have increased in Yemen's south and east provinces since the rise of protests demanding President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down. The three-month-long anti-government protests have undermined the security and stability of the country.
