Egyptian ex-Tourism Minister Garana sentenced to 5 years in prison for corruption

CAIRO, EGYPT (BNO NEWS) -- The Cairo Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced former Tourism Minister Zohair Garana to five years in prison due to corruption charges.

According to al-Ahram newspaper, the ex-minister and businessman Garana was found guilty of corruption and violating of auction laws in relation to the purchase of land in the Ain Sohkna resort area.

Garana was sentenced along two other businessmen who were also involved in the $51 million misuse of public funds. The former minister authorized the sale of state-owned land for a price lower than in the market.

The defendant was the last former official of the regime of ousted President Hosni Mubarak to receive a prison term. Last Thursday, former Interior Minister Habib El-Adly was sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption, profiteering and other charges.

El-Adly was also accused for the killing of peaceful protesters, damaging public and private property, creating a security vacuum by ordering the police to evacuate and set fire to their own buildings during the January revolution, and terrorizing citizens.

Garana and El-Adly were arrested on February 17 along steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz, a senior member of ousted president Mubarak's National Democratic Party (NDP). Approximately a dozen former ministers and businessmen are under investigation for corruption or abuse of authority.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces took control of Egypt after Mubarak, who led Egypt as president for three decades, stepped down after weeks of anti-government protests by crowds calling for greater democracy and respect of human rights.
