Hi - I understand warranties vary and this is something to be aware of

I bought a new Nikon in KL last July, in November the LED screen failed, on checking the warranty book found that it was only covered 'in country of purchase' ie Malaysia not here in Thailand, or anywhere else.

Nkon Thailand would accept it for repair - but I'd have to pay full cost even though it was 3 months old.

I understood that most if not all electronic equipment bought in Dubai came with a international warranty so if you have any problem you can get it repaired in your own country.

But i would not buy any electronic equipment as Dubai Duty Free if way more expensive then any normal shop in Bangkok.

And i don't talk about a small difference but a big one.

As you mention the UK, there are always plenty of bargains to be had in the camera line. If you are going to Thailand for a holiday and then back to the UK afterwards, surely the warranty and sale of goods act in the UK would be of more benefit than possibly saving a few £ buying abroad? I would check out prices in the UK. A good main dealer should also give you an international warranty. But I'd expect a main dealer to cost more than a bargain hunt on the internet. So many shops to choose from too.

Buying at an airport like dubai and getting an international warranty is fine but you need to send it to the main dealer for a repair or a designated repairer of the country you are in.

Hunting around BKK for example might be more time and effort than it is worth. Add to that the exchange rates. Maybe not such a bargain.

I live in Dubai and I can tell you that photographic equipment in the duty free area of dubai airport is not a good deal as you would get it outside of the airport. Also, the staff in the airport duty free are not so knowledgebale as the ones in the various stores in Dubai. my suggestion is that if you are looking for getting some decent gear, make a stopover for a day or two near a good mall (such as mall of the emirates) then you could shop around and find lots of photographic gear there at better prices and with international warranties.

If you are looking for booze chocolates and perfumes, cigars etc, also gold, then Dubai Duty free is very good value. Also with regards to gold, it can't be sold for cash in thailand, as thai gold. I never buy gold in dubai, I always buy gold in thailand as it can be liquidated easily.
