KIRKUK, IRAQ (BNO NEWS) -- At least 22 people were killed on Thursday morning when three powerful explosions ripped through locations in the Iraqi oil-rich city of Kirkuk, according to media reports.

Sources told the Aswat al-Iraq news agency that one of the explosions targeted an police employees garage in Kirkuk, while another targeted a police patrol. Two are believed to have been car bombs, while the third was said to be an explosive device.

"A booby-trapped car, parked on the road side close to Kirkuk Province's Council blew up on Thursday against a criminal police patrol, causing casualties among the patrol policemen and citizens," a police source told the Iraqi news agency.

The source added that at least 22 people were killed. "We can't consider the said result as final, because a large number of people have been seriously injured in the explosions," the source said, adding that many bodies were burnt beyond recognition.

According to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA), citing security sources, at least 80 people were also injured.
