Ratchadapisek Criminal Court yesterday sentenced Pornwat "KThong" Thongthanaboon to a twoyear suspended jail term and a Bt2,000 fine for carrying an unregistered pistol at the Crime Suppression Division Headquarters' parking lot in March last year.

The close associate of the late renegade MajGeneral Khattiya "Seh Daeng" Sawasdipol was initially sentenced to one year in jail and a Bt4,000 fine but the court halved the sentence and suspended the jail term on the grounds that his confession was useful.

Other defendants also had their sentences reduced. Mongkol Sarapan was fined Bt50 for carrying a knife and Suwit Khirirak was fined Bt1,000 for carrying a pistol, while the rest were acquitted.

The group were arrested in the police parking lot and found to be carrying weapons on March 6, 2010.

As KThong was a wanted man, the others were also charged with harbouring a fugitive. The court yesterday deemed that they did not know that KThong was wanted and hence acquitted them of the charge.

Even though in this case his prison sentence was suspended, he's still got prison time to serve, thankfully, for one of the other items on this convicted Red Shirt's laundry list of offenses.

WOW. One year to sentence a misdemeanor. I bet the fine would be THB10,000 and 5 year sentence if concealed weapon was used as a murder weapon, the reason, cause incriminating yourself provides useful information for the courts to help decide in a half reduced sentence. What logical sense is this BS!!!!

Judicial system here only thinks of what happened and not what could've happen to innocent social members.

The reason our couts give reduced sentences for confessions is due to having a population of 64,000,000 people and our courts are already back-logged for 3 years so if someone confesses and saves the government, police, prosecuters time and money it helps speed things up. This is not 'Law and Order" TV show or your country where the population is much lower and have a larger court and jail system.

If the courts did not give reduced sentences for confessions and the prosecution had to investigate more then we would have to build jails the size of Texas and would be back-logged for 10 years. It's not perfect but it works here.

So if population is 100,00,000, thailand will have a backlog of 5 years and a 75% reduction in jail sentence? since population is much larger, judges can give more reduced sentence to save money as criminals continue to grow with population. Ahh...now what your saying completely makes sense. The mis use of proper resources can actually be used as part of a variable in considering a criminal's sentence, lets throw the actual crime out the window.

FYI, Law & Order scripts depict real crimes that have happened, as well as the sentences. Thailand's consitution does have a right to a fair trial, but enforcing is another story.

AS an aside the UK is considering a similar solution due to the wish to stabilise the prison population, thus reducing re-offending and costs at the same time.........

Ludicrous... Even I knew Sae Dangs #2 was wanted....

how can his own partners he's running with not know?

Too ignorant to read the newspapers?... doubtful.

Re-offense should have an extended sentence but to keep cost low and improve social standards the UK government probably would reduce prison sentence after improvement and good behaviour in jail.

Wow only a 1000 baht fine for concealing a pistol? Everyone should have a couple!

That's the going rate for Thai citizens, farangs pay more, for sure!

No kidding 1000 THB for a Thai concealing a more than likely illegal un registered pistol.

But just 2 days ago I get harassed by a BIB for

"Hey you drop Smoke on ground" give me 2000 THB now..

To witch I replied I don't smoke...

Yes you do Pay me now!!! and shut your mouth...

I calmly stated in Thai " what is your name rank and Service number please?"

BIB walks away yelling obscenity about Farang being cheap...

Got to love living in this place...

Just to point out that Thailand is in fact SMALLER than Texas. Thailand=513,000km2 vs. Texas=696,200km2
