SATTAHIP, THAILAND (BNO NEWS) -- A 13-year-old boy has been accused of sexually assaulting and then killing a 9-year-old girl in central Thailand, local media reported on Wednesday.

The 9-year-old victim, who was not identified, went missing from her home in Sattahip District on Sunday although her mother did not report her missing until Wednesday morning. Sattahip District is located in Chonburi province, close to the tourism center of Pattaya.

According to the Pattaya One news organization, police quickly discovered that the girl was last seen with a 13-year-old boy. When first questioned, the boy told police that a construction worker had taken the girl at knife point to an area of wasteland.

The boy eventually led police to a grassy field where the naked, decomposing body of the 9-year-old girl was found. Dozens of locals watched as police investigated the crime scene.

According to Pattaya One, the boy later confessed to sexually assaulting the young girl before holding her head down into water until she died. The boy allegedly told police he was scared the girl would tell her parents about the assault.

The boy, whose identity was also not released, is being held by police and is expected to be charged with sexual assault and murder.
