THE HAGUE (BNO NEWS) -- The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague on Thursday welcomed the arrest of Bosnian Serb war crimes fugitive Ratko Mladic, who is charged with the murder of nearly 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica in 1995.

ICTY Prosecutor Brammertz said he welcomed the arrest and is awaiting the arrangements for his transfer to The Hague, where he will stand trial before the Tribunal. "We recognize the work done by the Serbian authorities, specifically the National Security Council and Serbia’s Action Team, in apprehending Ratko Mladic," Brammertz said. "We thank them for meeting their obligations towards the Tribunal and towards justice. We also acknowledge the efforts of the international community in supporting measures to secure Ratko Mladic's arrest."

Brammertz said his thoughts are foremost with the victims of the crimes committed during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. "These victims have endured unimaginable horrors - including the genocide in Srebrenica - and redress for their suffering is long overdue. Ratko Mladic's arrest is also significant for all people in the former Yugoslavia. We believe that it can have a positive impact on reconciliation in the region," the Prosecutor said.

Brammertz added: "Today is also an important day for international justice. Ratko Mladić’s arrest clearly signals that the commitment to international criminal justice is entrenched. Today’s events show that people responsible for grave violations of international humanitarian law can no longer count on impunity."

Mladic was on the run for 16 years since he was indicted in 1995 on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the laws or customs of war against Bosnian Muslim, Bosnian Croat and other non-Serb civilians in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 1992 - 1995 war.

When a christian kills muslims, he gets thrown in jail by the christians. When muslims kill christians, the muslims celebrate, and for them to even consider jailing the perpetrators would be laughable. I don,t get it, are we playing to different rules here ?

Of course. Did you not know? A christian killer is sentenced by law, not because he is christian but because he committed a crime against the law. A muslim killer is celebrated becaused he killed a human being who did not share his beliefs. Beliefs that have been forced upon him through his life and based on a book written over a thousand years ago.
