Hi,

Hope some seasoned travelers can offer some insight to booking flights on-line or through travel agent for this particular situation: I'm expecting a 4-5 month trip to Canada. My city of departure for the return to Thailand is unknown, neither is the return date (could be Oct / Nov / Dec). I resigned myself to booking a one way flight to Vancouver and then another to get back here when the return date can be known. It looks like I'll end up paying significantly more than what a round trip would cost. Is there no way to book a round trip with the return date and point of departure as speculative? Sage advice or useful tips are most welcome. Must leave soon.

thanks in advance,

Eva Air website does open returns, I would contact the airlines directly if possible.

Eva fly to Vancouver as well, check the box "open return", I have noticed that there is no significant price difference between an open return and a normal return booking.

A flexible return ticket should offer what you are looking for but is likely to be more expensive than a fixed 'saver' ticket.

Key words in the terms and conditions are: re-routable and Date Change Permitted.

Try checking on a 6 month validity round trip ticket to Vancouver on China Airlines. They allow you to change your return date at no charge.

This looks to be great advice. One note: there needs to be exact fare bucket, W in this case, availability to avoid change fees. It looks like anything up to 6 months is 45,395 all-in. I might book a R/T, at the outside limit you think you might have for your trip, then change it if you have to return earlier. Then I might arrange one-way transport from ???-YVR to connect to YVR-BKK?

For the OP, do you have any idea what the departing city might be (ex-CANADA)? Obviously if it were another city that CI served you could book BKK-YVR-BKK, then change to an open jaw. The ticket would have to be re-issued and you'd have to pay more/fees.

Thanks for the input, am now following up.

Eva priced at 46k THB (return 6 month open)

China Airline 55k THB (assuming Andy's statement no charge for changes)

One way, multiple airlines (on Kayak) 35k THB

Flight time and layover are considerations as is additional domestic flights (Phuket / Bangkok)

Looks like if I spend an inordinate amount of time researching this I might save a couple of hundred bucks after all is said and done. Are travel agents useful in this regard?

EVA air with the dates as given above 48,395.

As an open return 48,395 (valid for 6 months)

See the OP has got prices.....

If you use the ITA software you can get the best prices and take the Codes to the agents to try and get that price, I prefer direct with the airlines, as sometimes the prices are cheaper than advertised.

So far some good advice from those who know in the posts above.

I will probably be laughed at for what I'm about to say...but I'm to old to care all that much anyhow.

My question is...why, when you don't knowyour exact return date...do you want to book a return ticket, especially on-line NOW?

About 6 months ago I went from Greece, where I was then working, back to Boston, Massachusets to stay with my brother for about 2 months...i wasn't sure how long it would be. I booked a one way ticket from Greece to Boston. When I got to where my brother now lives, near Boston, it took me a little over a month to get the business I had to do completed. So I went to a travel agent...I didn't book a ticket on-line I went to a local travel agent in Boston. I expected to pay more for two one-way tickets, but the fact that I didn't know how long I had to be in the U.S. meant I didn't want to book a ticket fr the whole trip until I knew when I would be leaving.

Anyhow, I talked to the travel agent, she made some phone calls, and managed to find me a very good price on an ticket from Boston through Souel, Korea and on to Bangkok. To my surprise the total price for both tickets that year...the one from Greece to Boston and the later one from Boston to Bangkok was actually LESS than if I had booked the whole trip on-line. Not by much, but still less.

So my point is; while on-line booking is undoubtedly convienent, don't overlook the travel agemts in Canada as a source of your ticket back. You could be presently surprised. And if the price is higher than you want from the travel agent you can still ook that return ticket on-line in Canada.

Remember the travel agents make a commision on the tickets they sell, and if they know you are lookng for the best price, they will take the time to search around for the flight you want, just to get that comission. And for you it saves you the trouble of deciding when you have to return when you aren't really sure how long you have to stay.

Also, on those "cheap price tickets" you DO book on-line...read carefully the amount of time they are valid. Some of those bargain tickets MUST be used before (number here) days after they are booked. If you try to change or extend the period they are valid, you will have to pay for that service. For that reason, sometimes those heavily discounted tickets are NOT really a bargain.

Beano, what is "ITA software"? Codes? Starting to feel a bit lost here...maybe not such a good idea to try and go somewhere else.

Thanks to all for contributing, much appreciated.

That BR (Eva) 6 month open fare, while 3,000 baht more, seems like the easiest, best, most straight-forward; no open fare-bucket requirement. Flights/connections look a tad better. Maybe now down to mileage accrual, seat, IFE? Some rave about BR metal; I've never flown them. They do have better/more code-shares/marketing partners than CI, which may help re: HKT, some city in Canada TBD?

Thanks so much to all who have contributed here.

I am still looking at options but am now leaning to a one-way ticket due to the variables affecting my return.
