Neighbor, Non- Stop Chain Saw And Illegal Logging?

I notice how Phuket News reported " 9 trees were found.." , only nine trees and pictured one stump ? This is the third time I've caught them in sloppy writing. Looks like 10 rai at least gone missing which is a big fact to omit.

And yes, where is the wood that was found? Is this one of those trees?

So, problem solved? Still going to move away?

Problem solved? Are you kidding? It looks like what could turn out to be a hornet's nest of corrupted officials.

F * C K Y E A H I am getting out. I am rather looking forward to it in a relieved way now I've made a decision .

Sounds like a wise choice. Good thing you were renting rather than owning.

Or 30 year leasing you mean? Remembering we CANNOT own. Yeah I am very very glad I stuck with a simple legal 3 year lease of 8000 month. I shall miss it though, 5 years.. quite settled and comfortable, really lovely area except for the PIG.

If I"d not delved deeper and just followed what I read on heavily vested forums regarding all La- La on investment and 30 year leases somehow magically being same as owning.. , EXCEPT YOU CAN'T SELL IT

I'd be stuck.

The lawyer who found this place for me then tried to 30 year lease it to me, on a Ratch Passa Deux Title ( King's Land ) Only 3 year lease on that ..)

Mm OK need to go to Land Dept and get name of lessee of that land

This is an extreme example of the problem, but on a smaller scale this is experienced by people trying to settle in Thailand all the time. I know many folk with similar issues, who have bought a nice house only to have some eyesore or cacophony of noise appear next door after a couple of years. Normally there is little they can do about it. It's one of the ever present uncertainties of living here. If you can't handle it I advise leaving. In civilized countries are are at least some avenues of justice, but generally not here.

the Noise pollution ?

To The OP ,my problem ain't the same but in the similarity. have you found any real solution lately? understand how you feel. I have this, "a couple of bands rotating in the neighboring areas". They will start from approximately at 20.00 to 24.00 everyday. And it starts to get louder as it gets later in the nite. It will be many times more intensify than a usual nite if they have a special Thai popular singer/group happen to perform at these places. I have to keep all the windows shut at nite and turn on the a/c. The first few days, I don't feel too much irritating from whence it comes. A month later, I have this over and over again, probably the same songs/lyrics including Zombie and some 80's songs everynite then I fed up with it. I called the cop 191 and reported they, the cop said their officers can be there to temporarily warn them about the loud noise and to pause a quick break. The suggestion for the long-term solution is to have an official petition submitted to the municipal authorities. Because they can grant the permissions for these establishments and on the other hand they can cancel those who jeopardize the society. People said the owners are "Sen Yai(thick flat noodles)"

Thais understand their place in the order; many farangs do not -- which leads to problems.

Tosh, The English have always known their place, since Magna Carta (1215)

The Magna Carta was about rights for the nobility not the average bloke. Joe Bloke got his rights through evolution of English common law which the Yanks borrowed.

As far as the rest of the Op's rant, same same all over the world in that it is the golden rule in which those with the gold make the rules and those without do without.

Not sure where in my rant I say I have less gold. Contrary I'm sure my monetary holdings are way and far above his, hence his need to ( allegedly ) procure timber cut illegally and build a home on land he himself cannot own.

And after all, I got him to stop the chain sawing and really with a mere verbal request, ( who knew it was illegal, allegedly ) so really one could say I've defied convention which I suspect isn't really true, as I've never had someone not stop their obnoxious neighborly behavior. I've had police come and stop a recycler from constantly burning his plastic leavings. It's just new neigbors move in and have to be asked to behave civilly.

So if you agitate, you can change things of course, it's just the constant annoyance. Maybe another area, it is building up non- stop here.. But it will be there, too.

No, I don't think Thailand is capable of sustaining itself and the politics are increasingly totalitarian and the 30 year land leasing option is a bad investment, so....

Some people seem to see the problems here as being the same as those in their home lands. I don't see how. There are noise problems everywhere for sure, but in most of our home countries we can do something about it to some extent. Plus I think that people in our home countries generally have more consideration for those around them, unlike many Thais.

Everyone I have known here has had neighbor issues, and frequently the only solutions which don't lead to grudges and violence mean moving away. The only real solution (which is not a solution for many) is to rent and not get too attached. Even if the neighbors themselves are ok, there's never anything to stop the owner of an adjacent building from knocking it down to begin some grueling 1-2 year construction project with major machinery.

That's something to bear in mind when looking for places, too- look around for ongoing construction or posted announcements of such. Be vocal with owners about how you won't live in a place with too much of that around. Hopefully, with enough hints from enough people, property values will someday begin to rationalise and rules will follow suit to protect them. In the meantime... rent and keep those boxes handy.

I see this on Thai TV occasionally. huge area as far as the eye can see deforested and the officials are all scratching there heads. We'll get em next time hey; can't blame us; how are we expected to notice these things ?

Everyone saves face . Everyones Concerns are put to rest. better get back to building that teak Mansion :)

True. Don't mess with the big boys. A farang's life is worth nothing.

It costs more to knock off a farang than a Thai -- much more media exposure and attention than knocking off Somchai.

True. Somchai might be worth 25 satang. A farang is probably worth 50 satang.

Don't forget to throw a match in there on your way out. A lot of wood chips from the chain saw.:ermm:

To TigerWan,

This is the digital age. Take lots of photos and post them on the internet or maybe even ThaiVisa Forum (after consulting with Phuyai Ban George).

Funny you say that. I am such an avid recycler, I have kept all my move in boxes in the spare room I use as a my junk room. I 'll need quite a few more

I agree so much with what you say about speaking up. I see so many foreigners here seemingly just resigned to what they consider r 3rd class status.

As I say I"ve never had a request for noise or burning go unheeded, and I've gone to the police on two occassions, with success, (3 rd still pending Y I K E S )

And yes, this and other rude behavior we all know about, is excused by this " Thainess" factor when really, is it just inertia from expats also lacking in civic ethics??

I understand the anger of the person who has created this topic........... and forgive me but............... I think it is so dam_n funny!

One of the things I love about Thailand is the crazy people. One time I was staying in a guest house in Krabi for an extended period and a Thai family was staying in the room next to mine for a few nights. They made more noise than the Manchester City Supporters Club at the most inappropriate times (ie. 5am in the morning) but it is the type of thing I remember with fondness.

One of my good Thai friends tells me that when she goes back to her village she never sleeps in because the entire village rises at the crack of dawn and explodes with noise - consideration for those who may want to sleep is not even on the radar screen!
