Ex-minister in Court for Assets Concealment

The Supreme Court's division for political post holders has accepted an asset concealment case against former education minister Somsak Prissanananthakul for trial.

The Supreme Court's division for political post holders has called the first hearing for the case in which the National Anti-Corruption Commission, or NACC, sought a five-year ban on former education minister Somsak Prissananantakul for false asset declaration.

The NACC has reached a consensus that Somsak deliberately concealed his assets in deposit accounts totalling about 28 million baht during his term as education minister starting in 1996.

In the first hearing, Somsak denied all charges against him.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for September 2.

Pheu Thai might find its gov't a pipe dream: Sanan

By The Nation

Chart Thai Pattana adviser Sanan Kachornprasart on Friday poured cold water over a claim that the Pheu Thai Party was already negotiating to form the next government, arguing the Pheu Thai-led coalition might end up being a pipe dream.

"I would congratulate Pheu Thai if it can form the coalition but I suspect the party will find itself daydreaming," he said.

Sanan was reacting to the Thursday's remarks of Pheu Thai candidate Snoh Thienthong who claimed to have made a coalition deal with a party.

Snoh said he projected a hugh victory and that he had convinced an ally to join the coalition bandwagon if Pheu Thai could not secure a clear majority to form a single-party government.

Sanan countered that coalition formation talks would be unrealistic before the vote outcome was known.

He said pending the vote, his Chart Thai Pattana was upbeat in receiving several offers to join the coalition alliance.

He also said he anticipated tough negotiations ahead, warning that Pheu Thai might find "cobras" in its midst. He was alluding to the Prachakorn Thai Party betrayal to pave way for the formation of the Chuan Leekpai government in 1997.

Police designate three trouble zones

By The Nation

Police on full alert for balloting, Police have been on the state of full alert in the face of fierce race for the July 3 vote, national police chief General Wichean Potphosree said on Friday following his meeting with the Election Commission to ensure a smooth balloting.

"Police will step up security in proportionate to the intensified race," he said.

Wichean said police measures would focus on the crackdown of two issues - vote-buying and weapons of war.

The beef-up of security will cover the crucial period between two days before election day and a day following the vote, he said.

The security will comprise three levels designating yellow, orange and red voting zones based on the risk assessment, he said, noting that constituencies in Chiang Rai and Phayao would received a highest priority due to fierce competition.

He said the task force 315 would carry on its suppression of illicit drugs in Bangkok and five surrounding provinces, dismissing the allegation raised by the Pheu Thai Party that the military-police operations were a pretext to intimidate the red shirts in the lead-up to the vote.

Horwang students sickened by food poisoning, not E. coli infection: School authorities

BANGKOK, June 10 - School authorities in the Thai capital investigating this week's spate of illness found that students at Horwang School came down with vomiting and diarrhea due to food poisoning, not E. coli bacteria infection, according to Chinnapat Phumratana, Secretary-General of Office of the Basic Education Commission.

Thursday's lunch was initially presumed to be the cause of the illness of almost 100 students who felt sick and demonstrated symptoms of food poisoning.

Vibhavadi Hospital director Prompong Peerabool said 108 students were hospitalised there, with 16 students still admitted for treatment.

Most of the students admitted to hospital have been released and those remaining are expected to be discharged in the next few days.

The illness is likely to be caused by bacteria, but it is unrelated to the E. coli O104 strain which is causing the outbreak in Europe. However, confirmation from lab tests will be known in the next two days, the doctor said. (MCOT online news)
