PESHAWAR (BNO NEWS) -- At least 37 people were killed and scores were injured on Saturday night in a powerful blast that ripped through a supermarket in Peshawar of northwest Pakistan, TV channel Samaa reported.

The powerful blast took place at the Kyber supermarket, shortly after a minor blast left three persons wounded in the same area. The explosion was powerful enough to shatter the windowpanes of nearby buildings while the restaurant located alongside a five-story residential tower was destroyed completely, collapsing big portion of the plaza.

Police sources confirmed that at least 35 people were killed and over 100 sustained injuries in the twin blasts.

According to hospital sources, the death toll may rise further.

Rescue activities are still taking place in the area since several people were buried under the debris of the collapsed buildings around the blast site.

The area of Khyber Super Market houses many restaurants, government offices and the offices of television and newspapers. It is also a home to many bachelors who reach Peshawar for purpose of studies and jobs from across province.

The United States Embassy in Pakistan condemned the terrorist bombings and sent condolences to the people affected by the attack.

"This was a cruel and vicious attack deliberately designed to maim and kill innocent people. No religion or legitimate political philosophy justifies the indiscriminate slaughter of innocents. The terrorists who perpetrated this brutality are beyond the pale of civilization," the statement said.

An investigation is underway.
