Bombs kill two in troubled Thai south

NARATHIWAT, June 24, 2011 (AFP) - A series of roadside bomb blasts in Thailand's insurgency-torn deep south on Friday killed at least two people dead and left 13 others wounded, police said.

The devices, buried at intervals under the same road in Narathiwat Province, were detonated by remote control while a group of irrigation workers were taking their lunch break.

"Two Thai Buddhist men were killed immediately and 13 others wounded, of which two are in critical condtion," a local police officer said.

More than 4,500 people, both Muslims and Buddhists, have died in almost daily attacks since insurgents launched an uprising in Thailand's deep south near the Malaysian border in early 2004.

Critics accuse the government of failing to address the grievances of Thailand's Malay Muslim minority, including alleged abuses by the military and a perceived lack of respect for their ethnic identity, language and religion.

In a separate attack on Friday, a 35-year-old Muslim deputy village headman was shot dead in drive-by shooting in Yala province, police said.
