True-DTAC Dispute Blamed on Fierce 3G Race

The information technology minister says the current legal fight between the country's second and third largest telecommunication service providers resulted from fierce competition in the 3G market.

Information Technology and Communications Minister Juti Krairiksh insisted his ministry has nothing to do with True Move's petition against Total Access Communication, or DTAC on the charge of violating the Foreign Business Act.

Juti stated he will not act in favor for any party and commented the legal dispute was motivated by competition to take the lead in the third generation or 3G wireless communication business.

The minister then remarked he could not speculate about the conclusion of the probe into the complaint against DTAC at the moment.

DTAC's legal staff recently met the investigation panel of the Commerce Ministry's Business Development Department to present the firm's shareholder structure.

DTAC's legal department director Raviphan Pitakchatwong maintained his company's majority stake is owned by Thai nationals as required by the alien business law.

Director general of the Business Development Department Banyong Limprayulwong said the investigation panel asked DTAC to provide more evidence and related information during its next meeting on Wednesday.

Banyong stated the investigation into two shareholder firms Thai Telco Holdings and Takwu Holdings and four other smaller-stake owners will begin today and remarked the probe should be completed by July 4.

He said if the investigation finds that DTAC is in fact a foreign company, his department will press charges against it and its proxy shareholders for breaching the foreign business law.

Parties found guilty in such a case could be sentenced up to three years in prison, or fined from 100,000 to one million baht or both.

The court will also order termination of a convicted firm business operation and a fine from 10,000 to 50,000 baht if it continues to operate.

A fine of that magnitude will simply crush DTAC

The below part might though. Being a DTAC subscriber for many years I hope they get this worked out. Prefer not having to get a new phone number. ;)

Watched a program on world t.v. yesterday-re Cambodia being FAR more advanced than this upstanding country, they have the system and are going on soon to the next generation system, All this big shouting for an out of date system. But I am not up on these matters and it shows, but was surprised at the advanced level of the backward neighbour :whistling:

Shutting down DTAC would be bad for business foreign owned or not.. how many thousands of Thais are employed with dtac.... This will get fixed under the table, like everything else does in this, what can only be described as a(under all the fluff) banana republic.

God forbid True monopolise in Thailand... A dreadfully incompetent company in just about every service they provide. AIS and Dtac run rings around them and it's not rocket science to understand why that is.
