no feet problems from damp? what vaccines do they get in thailand? were yours tested for johnnes diseas or CAE etc???

just curioius, and of course need pics of cute kids and nannies.. and pose of the buck of course

wow that was a lot of Questions one gave birth last night / dont know how that works out I have had them give birth twice in a year and a bit and I am not alone in that in Thailand I know Russ had 4 babys from one girl in a year.

I let them do what they want I kick them out at 8 am and there back for night fall. I live on a lake that is 5 miles long and they have all the food they need and more I could keep 1000 and not put a dent in the growth

Yes all tested most of them are the Nubian type and there all as fat as pigs its that or there all ready to give birth again. LOL

I ivomac them every 3 months cost is 60 baht a goat from your local goverment office

I trim the feet when i think they need to be done

I keep them for milk to give to my two rotty pups but I do want to have a go at cheese when i get round to it.

Other than that I keep them because I like them there funny and I want to make money out of them I think thats a fair answer

and yes I will put some pics up when I have 5 mins spare time

Across the Mekong, in Laos, even in Vientiane, there are LOTS of goats. I don't know of the legislation for import to TH though...

BTW, I am also looking for Nigerian Dwarf Goats, 4 does and 1 buck, if somebody knows where to get them, please let me know.

I have some Thai Dwalf Goats LOL I dont know why I still have them they are two small for most people and there is next to no milk but I think there are not that many about anymore everyone has gone to Nubians so im doing my bit for rare breeds

i love nubians and their ears....

always worth while to save breeds for genetic diversity ; as for milk, dwarfs give a small amount but for daily household needs probably enough since they were kept as meat/milk goats.. anytime u get an animal that is multipurpose, u lose a bit in amonts: israeli baladi/nubi goats are for meat/milk/skin so give a bit less milk and have less muscle mass then say saanan swiss goat and boer goat respectively; however, they were suited for nomad lifestyle, little water, harsh grazing/foraging, meat and milk on the hoof, sturdy and disease free... also smart.

boer goats are difficult to milk because of their many teats/nipples...

sounds good job; good worming plan, etc... pics

Bina, I know you love your goats and I did not know were to post this and so I thought this was a good a place as any. Last Night i had a set of twins born. When we got there one was dead, of course that was the girl and the boy was still alive. She is a First time mum and she will not have anything to do with the baby boy at all.

I fed her and tied one of her back legs up while he fed. Ive done this 4 times today any ideas or tips to save my back please?

He is as strong a baby as I have ever seen and wants to feed.

I do not want to bottle feed this goat I have had one that imprinted on me before and followed me everywhere it drove me mad.

I am looking for Boer Goats in north east Thailand but will travel for the right stock, I am also looking far Saanan Goats and any breed of sheep if you have any goats or sheep for sale let me know in a PM

hi andy, sorry i havent been active for a while but saw u were in trouble so:

tieing her leg up is an ok idea; try feeding her her fave food while u let the little guy nurse; dont bottle feed but u can move him to bucket feeding (use a flat pan first); or just deal until he is about four weeks old and then start him on kibble by putting a few pieces in his mouth, his rumen will start to develop a bit faster then most kids and u can move him to kibble and forage and wean him earlier then most kids... -- and then sellhim to slaughter because an 'impressed' male is dangerous when older, in rut, and especially if he grows horns (u can always dehorn, and boers have particularly dangerous horns.)

btw, why would u want saanan goats in thailand? white, ugly, sensitive to heat? if its milk u want, try indigenous breed with anglo/nubi cross. if its meat, then boars are great, also make great pets, andifu have patiences u can hand milk out of two of the many teats they have..

btw, usually males are the weaker of the twins. surprised the girl died... too bad

good luck

Hi Bina,

Thanks for the tips

All is ok now she took to the little chap after 24 hours, I think she did not burst the sack on the girl and thats why it died. Ill give her another chance and if she is a bad mum next time round then you know she will be in a curry

Had a Maden give birth to a single male last week 4 days after the last nightmare so I have two boys for sale latter in the year

The saanan boy was to cross to the nubians and try and get a bit more milk, as I am not over impressed with only half to one lt a day from the nubians. I have a mate who has an old Alpine who is 8 years old now and she still gives 2lts a day

The boer goats might also make a good cross to the nubians to give a little more meat if I can not find a milk goat Ill go the meat only way and it must be nice to get 3 and 4 kids at a time

Thanks again for the help ill keep you posted on births deaths and anything else goat LOL

u know u should try to be at the births; my nannies always appreciated the support, petting, and the help with twins or more... its enough that u get the nose cleaned off, then let the mother do the rest... not neccesarily a bad mom; if she took to the male after 24 hours , was it her first? some nannies, just like human moms, dont seem to grasp that they are giving birth and it takes the a day or so for their mom instinct to kick in. a bad mom would just push the babies away or not bother with them at all.. we had a nanny that was so traumatized by her own birththat she ran allover the yard to escape her head and hooved out baby... finally gave birth and we had to lock her and kid up in a stall for a week of forced bonding. second birth she was a great mom.

we got up to three liters a day with the nubian/anglo/baladi mixes but i hand milked them, quiety. nubians have less milk but much richer.. i hate saanans, milk, udder, horns, white fur and all. ick. alpines are lovely animals... also very trainable.

its great, but thats only after second and third births and be very careful with your feeding plan tiwth them; nannies with twins and triplets are more prone to pre eclampsia (goat style not people style although just as fatal); and boers are heavy, so their feeding requriements for good pregnancies are different than for nubian.... also, make sure then that u are prepared for bottle /bucket supplementing if u will be wanting the kids for meat, and lastly, dehorn the males at bith if they arent going to the table... boer male horns are deadly. i know of two different folks here in israel that were injured by boer horns: one in an eye (a vet assistant) and the other went in to do hooves and almost got disembowled.

and the guy that wrote about letting his child get butted by a goat: iw as butted by an angry male cyprus/nubian male w/o horns, 90 kilo of hard head smashed me in to our wooden fence. i stil have a ripped muscle in one thigh that causes problems occasionally , and this is 6 years later. an other time, my boer male fave rushed me, tossed me and i landed on my back, on rocks, cell phone smashed, pride injured as was my back and the hsirts that were on me. male animals of any type are not to be messed with, ridden or teased. that is how farm injuries happen. my boer male had to be returned to previous owner whne i stopped running th petting zoo due to his hatered of any other caretaker, all males btw. male sheep also almost killed one of my sheep dealers, an old iraqi shepherd (about 70 yrs old)... that sheep tried to kill the guy's wife when she went in to feed; he tried to 'rape' me and would chase me all round the yard (we kept him for season only)and vinegar, and all other detterants didnt work, until one day he tried on someone else, and the someone else took a metal crowbar and turned the ram in to mutton...

no prob. not in the animal kingdom anymore although i miss it sooooooooo much... its like an instinctive part of me really, like an ex horse rider or something..
