ISLAMABAD (BNO NEWS) -- At least three militants and three police officers were killed on Sunday in two separate attacks in Pakistan's volatile tribal region of North Waziristan and in the northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to The Nation newspaper, militants attacked Razmek Army Camp with rockets and heavy artillery fire in North Waziristan. The security forces immediately retaliated to the attack which led to exchange of fire.

Three militants were killed during the fighting while the rest managed to flee.

In a separate incident, unknown militants attacked a police check post in Shangla district in the northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killing three police officers. One policeman was also injured in the attack.

The police also retaliated to the attack, forcing the attackers to flee.

North Waziristan forms part of Pakistan's Afghan border, which the United States considers to be the most dangerous place on Earth. It is known to be a stronghold of the Taliban's Haqqani Network, considered one of the top terrorist organizations and threats to U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
