Mount Soputan volcano erupts in Indonesia

2011-07-03 23:20:09 GMT+7 (ICT)

SULAWESI, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Authorities on early Sunday morning established an 8-kilometer exclusion zone around Mount Soputan in North Sulawesi of Indonesia after the volcano erupted.

The Jakarta Post reported that the eruption started around 6 a.m. local time, but there was no evacuation. The eruption occurred shortly after the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) increased the volcano's status from "caution" to "alert," which is one step below the most serious level of "danger."

"Mt. Soputan has erupted 6,000 meters (3.72 miles) into the air and has sent searing clouds moving westward," Surono, the government's top volcanologist said.

The volcano last erupted in June 2008.

Indonesia is on the so-called 'Pacific Ring of Fire', an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin that is prone to frequent and large earthquakes. Volcanic eruptions also occur frequently in the region.
