Two first-time voters reveal their pride, being part of it all

Thanatcha Chalayonnavin. Communication Arts, Nation University

Casting a ballot for the first time, I was thrilled and proud to do a job all Thais must do. I was among those registered for advance voting last week as I had an appointment yesterday. Excitement should be shared by all. At Bangkok Yai polling booth, there was a big crowd checking their names on the board. I did my round and went to the booth with my ID card and the pre-election document.

Once given the green and pink ballots, I walked to the stand with shaking legs. Making a mark on the papers gave me a sense of independence. I felt I'm a truly grown-up person, who just completed an important duty.

Now, I'm anxiously waiting for the election result, like others who want to know who will be the next Thai prime minister. Whoever that will be, he or she comes to power with our votes. Mine is part of the votes in an historic election. I don't care who will become the prime minister, but I do want to know the result of voters' decision. The PM may not be the person I voted for, but he or she represented the majority of voters. I hope that all respect the election result and clear Thailand from its past shame.

Nattachai Tungwongwiwat. Communication Arts, Nation University

I had a feeling of excitement when I went to the polling booth. I cast my vote in Chon Buri on June 26. On that day, I got up early, as I didn't want to miss my first chance to vote.

With a strong wish to be part of Thai politics, I went to the polling booth with friends who also cast votes for the first time. I left the booth with pride, hoping that my first vote would lead to Thailand's political development.

Yesterday, I watched TV and listened to the news, all ears for the election result. Hopefully, the party I voted for was the one that will form the new government.

Exit polls blasted for huge margins of error

By The Nation

Pollsters in Bangkok yesterday came under attack for their high margins of error in reporting exit-poll results that gave the Pheu Thai Party a landslide win in the capital.

Democrat Party spokesman Buranat Samutrak called on pollsters to come up with reasons their exit-poll results were so wrong.

Exit polls by several pollsters reported that the Pheu Thai Party would see a landslide victory in Bangkok by winning 30 of the 33 seats and the Democrats just three.

In fact, the vote count at 9pm showed the Democrats defeating Pheu Thai by 23 seats to 10 in Bangkok.

Buranat called on the media to report only the results of actual vote counts.

Analyses on the error margin of exit polls of several pollsters at 7.30pm showed Sripathum Poll carrying an error margin of 13.8 percentage points, Abac Poll's error margin was 17.7 percentage points, Dusit Poll carried a 20.68-percentage-point error margin and Nida Poll 22.88 percentage points.

Turakij Bandit Poll director blamed uncontrollable factors for the high error margins. He said that although the sampling process followed standard procedures, pollsters could not get enough Democrat Party supporters to take part in the exit polls, whereas Pheu Thai supporters such as red shirts who are politically active were more willing to speak their minds.

Dusit Poll director Sukhum Chaloeisub agreed, saying most Democrat supporters were not accessible, while Pheu Thai backers were more politically expressive.

Princess Chulabhorn turns 54

BANGKOK, 4 July 2011 (NNT) - Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn, the youngest daughter of Their Majesties the King and Queen, turns 54 today.

She has been a very active member of the Royal Family. With a doctoral degree in science, Her Royal Highness has been working to promote public health, education and scientific developmemt of the country. As Her Royal Highness has mentioned it several times during her visits to rural areas, her life is not like a princess in a fairy tale.

“As a child of His Majesty the King, I have many tasks. The major task that HM the King has taught me since I was small is the duty to the nation and the people. He told me that we were born to serve the people…”

Her Royal Highness is currently the president of the Chulabhorn Research Institute as well as Chulabhorn Hospital, both established at her initiative to promote scientific research and provide treatment to cancer patients, most of whom are in grassroots families. She has also established the Chulabhorn Graduate Institute to produce a new generation of scientific leaders. The program has prompted her to visit many countries in Europe, Asia and America in order to promote exchange programs enabling internationally renowned scientists to work with Thai scientists and Thai students to do research abroad.

Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn has also worked to relieve HM the King’s concerns for health conditions of the the rual poor nationwide. She has accepted to be the president of the Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer Foundation after her aunt, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana - the Princess of Naradhiwas, passed away in early 2008. The position has taken Her Royal Highness to all parts of the country to monitor the work of medical volunteers and give them moral support. During each visit, the Princess also helps examine symptoms of illness of patients and sends difficult cases to Chulabhorn Hospital in Bangkok for further treatment free of charge. According to the Princess, she has plans to increase the number of royal mobile medical units to cover 54 provinces, instead of 52 at present.

When asked whether Her Royal Highness is tired of the innumerable duties, the Princess courteously replies “No. I am working from the heart. I’ve never got tired.”

On the most auspicious occasion of Her Royal Highness’s birthday, NNT is pleased to join with all Thai people in extending our most respectful wishes for a very happy anniversary, good health and happiness.

SET to go up this week

BANGKOK, 4 July 2011 (NNT) – Kasikorn Research Centre (KResearch) has projected that the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index is likely to increase this week (from 4 to 8 July 2011) while the 3 July general election result will play role in the stock trade.

KResearch reported that the SET index last week closed at 1,041.48 points, up 1.81% from the week earlier following a declining concern over the Greek debt crisis. Meanwhile, the MAI index closed at 304.27 points, up 1.19% from the week before.

The SET index fell last Monday upon concerns over Greek debt crisis and oil price decline; however, it went up for the rest of the week as investors eased their tension about the general election. The SET index also rose following foreign markets after the Greek debt crisis eased off.

KResearch and Kasikorn Securities predicted that the SET index this week would go up in line with counterpart markets in the region. The support line will be at 1,036-1,022 points and the resistance line at 1,050-1,082 points respectively.

Domestic factors to be monitored are the general election’s result and consumer price index of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce while external factors in focus are still with the global oil prices and US economic figure reports.
