Mein Gott....

I could not bring myself to put this in the Good Restaurants thread....went by there today on the way up to Mai Sai for a burger and boy was I ever disappointed! The last time I was there, I had one of the most delicious, real hamburgers I have ever had...in Thailand. Now that was last September after the remodel and it was just dandy. Today was just a total disaster. The paddy was something other than beef...as it was just totally tasteless and definitely not what he used to use. It was rather thick and reddish looking and was horrible. Sorry Barry....I like you and all, but you need to go back to your old supplier or get a new one. I suppose I will have to take my burger fixes in Chiang Mai now. The wife had a shroom burger and it was not bad, but the basic old standby was just not there. Really wished we had gone to the Rimrock for the buffett for about the same price. PP

I ordered the big cheeseburger at the golf course a few weeks ago. Took forever to get it. When it arrived, it was a big, dry, ground chicken patty as near as I could guess. Couldn't eat it. Terrible stuff. Ate the fries and went home. When I ordered, the chick asked if I wanted beef, chicken or pork. When you order a cheeseburger, who asks what kind of meat you want? A cheeseburger is a cheeseburger and a chicken burger is a chicken burger and pork burger is a pork burger. I told her I wanted beef. But whatever it was, it sure wasn't beef. She disappeared for good after she brought the meal.

I went to a Thai friends house for his birthday party last night and as usual there was plenty of Thai food to eat.

I nibbled on a few bits but wasnt feeling in the mood to eat Thai , I wanted a burger. When I left the party , I braved the weather driving my motorbike 3 or 4 km into town and went to the Burger Joint/Diner at the old airport.

I have been there a few times in the past and was not impressed at all and vowed not to return but due to the craving I had and as the hour was 2am there is not many places that are open 24hrs serving western and Thai fare.

When I arrived I was the only customer in the restaurant area but there were 2 Thais playing snooker in the bar area.

The only staff member on duty came to me as soon as I stepped in the door , brought a menu with him and offered me some free popcorn which I declined. I ordered a hot coffee to warm myself up and then picked out the mushroom burger set, from the menu .About 15 minutes later my meal arrived , my mushroom burger looked good and I was very pleased with the presentation , an open faced bun , one side having the burger with onions , mushrooms and cheese on it and the other half of the bun topped with fresh clean and crisp lettuce, a huge slice of tomato and sliced onion rings.

This was accompanied by some crinkle cut fries that were golden in colour and hot. There was also a small finger sized bowl of coleslaw. The attentive staff member refilled my coffee and also brought condiments from the fridge such as mayonaise and ketchup. That was good to see it was being stored correctly , may places have the mayo and sauces sitting around all day in the heat and bacteria loves sauces.

My burger looked as if it was a 1/4 lb beef patty , thick, moist , well cooked and full of flavour , I was quite impressed considering I had my doubts about going there again. The whole meal was very nice but I only have 2 points of critisism, the coleslaw wasnt so good, it wsa drenched in a watery mayo and sweet. The other point was the coffee,

I would have liked a good coffee as served in the coffee shops of Chiang Rai and possibly something for the owner to improve on . Over all I was very satisfied with my meal . I will return again.

The young man who served me said that normally he has a co-worker with him but he never showed up , so he was running the place on his own. If there had been a few pople in for meals , there may have been a delay but luckily I was the only customer in .

The price for my meal was 285 bht for the food and coffees.

I had intended to write this review as soon as I got home but waited until now only to be suprised that the WCH Joint was on topic already.

Many thanks Barry for the improvements over the past year , I enjoyed it and will return again.

Barry now has 3 WCH outlets in Chiang Rai.

Old Airport Air Force Golf open 24 hours (not suggested for late nites)

WCH near the Wang Inn near the old bus station open 24 hours, new place and full staff.

WCH in the Night Bizzare, open from about 4pm til 11pm or 12 midnight.

Quickest food is at the WCH near the old bus station, and Pizza oven also. Not sure if they serve the breakfast menu there also.

At least they try harder than McDonald's here.

Only critic: Skimpy servings on the Tomato, Lettuce, and Onion now that they have the new locations. Used to have big slices, now the size of a sliver every time I have gone there.

A Restaurant can not please all the people all the time.

Biggest problem with WCH has alsways been the staff's lack of proper understanding and service.

The product quality has always been basically very good.

Being a home cooked type restaurant, the food will not always be the same every time.

His staff I am sure do not understand this, but pretty sure Barry does understand and is trying in this non natural hamburger eating world here in Chiang Rai with Thai staff (many I am sure do not understand or eat the western food).

Funny how in many Thai establishments where they server hamburgers, the staff will question if you want pork (ham to them is pork, so if they do not understand they will ask).

Just like asking if you want Meat with your Cheese Burger.

Thai Logic, think about it................

I realize he is trying to do the impossible...especially here with something so foreign to his staff, but the pattie did not even closely resemble any hamburger pattie I have ever seen, eaten or refused. It just wasn't a hamburger pattie...it was...something else. No taste I have ever experienced :bah:. I do wish him luck, because he has his hands full, especially with three going on. Whew. PP

Quite easy, but going out to eat one is nice as well, it's called social interaction and most people enjoy it occasionally.

Agree. But the OPdid not mention anything about socialising, he was just not satisfied with his burger. But he did mention that he plan to go to CM just to fill his cravings. Hence my question. :)
