UPDATE 3 -- Three bomb blasts rock Mumbai, at least 8 killed

2011-07-13 21:55:53 GMT+7 (ICT)

MUMBAI (BNO NEWS) -- Three bomb blasts in rapid succession hit three crowded locations in India's financial capital of Mumbai on Wednesday evening, officials said, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens more.

The first explosion happened at around 6.45 p.m. local time at the Zaveri Bazaar in south Mumbai. It was followed by a bomb blast at Opera House, also in south Mumbai, at 6.47 p.m. local time. A third explosion happened shortly after at a bus stop in Dadar West, located in central Mumbai.

The total number of casualties was not immediately known, but police confirmed at least eight people were killed in the three explosions. Another 70 people were believed to be injured, some of them seriously.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (HMA) confirmed the blasts were caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and said it appears to be a coordinated terrorist attack.

As a result of the attack, a high security alert has been declared in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, and Tamil Nadu.
