Dealer shot dead, 1m pills found

By The Nation

Police shot dead a suspected drug courier yesterday in a gunfight in Chiang Rai, which saw more than one million amphetamine and other illegal tablets seized.

The unidentified gunman and a fellow courier were intercepted a vehicle late on Sunday night in a stakeout in Mae Sai district, but the pair opened fire on police with automatic weapons and sped away.

The suspects' pickup later ran off a road after a brief chase and one man was shot in an ensuing gunfight, before the other managed to flee. Police found over a million ya ba pills in the vehicle, plus |73 bars of 'Ice' flake, an |AK-47 assault rifle and ammunition.

Police said the suspects worked for a network of drug gangs and used the four-day long weekend to transport the drugs, hoping police would ease up on routine patrols and checkpoints.

The drugs were estimated to have a street value of Bt500 million. More than 13 million amphetamine tablets have been seized in the far North over the past six months, along with 100kg of 'Ice' and 200kg of heroin, police said.

Wish they would say "Chiang Rai province" in these stories, I thought it was a shoot out around the clock tower.

I agree, people reading may think Chiang Rai is not safe..

It is not actualy in Chiang Rai itself, it is always out somewhere else where these things happen.

I just love how someone always gets away from the police in these confrontations. It appears the cops never have a back-up plan or enough personnel to conduct the operation. But, at least they try and don't give up. Glad the cops weren't hurt.

Is the Keystone Police Academy located here, I wonder? ett

What am I saying? The Keystoners only carried night sticks for petes sake! Whoever Pete was. I have mixed feelings on extrajudicial proceedures, but with the case of drugs and pedophiles, I will vote for that one in a heatbeat. However I think justice served with a rusty coke bottle on pedophiles would be just fine. Just the dirty old men here trying for the young (of aged) girls is one thing, but....then again that is totally acceptable in Thai culture. Hell if all are legal aged, it should be accepted in all cultures and I think it is in most parts of the world. But pedophilia is a condition that only warrants eradication by any and all means. I do enjoy a good ending to a drug story like this one, though. ett

I meant to mention....I am glad the law enforcement here hasn't been bought off like in Mexico. That is a failed state for sure and will become the next real war, the US will be involved in....and I am not talking about that failed attempt of the War on Drugs crap, either. ett

Good thing it is not Turkey...There the bad guys always try to escape after being questioned so are then shot.

I see a lot of Border patrol Police on my travels. They seem to have regular army and the Guys in Black with them too.

when they are out, they are out in force and armed to the teeth. Automatic Rifles for sure, but Saw'n off shotguns, and what I can only describe as an Elephant Gun.

Not sure they are active 24x7, It does appear to be a show of strength and I do sometimes wonder if everything stops for Lunch or at 5PM.

certainly wouldn't want to be within a few Kilometers of a resulting Gunfight . Neither would my Elephant.

Jubby,

I saw bullet-proof vests for elephants in Mai Sai, the last time I was there....cheap, cheap. Can't be too careful, eh? Get one on that guy...those guys in black mean business. ett
