Student Loans

B) A friend of mine called me today and said that his girlfriend/fiance asked for 51,000 Baht to pay a student loan for High School. His girlfriend comes from a small village in Lower Issan. She has graduated from college in BKK so I clarified with him that this was for High School not college. He said that she owes over 300,000 Baht for college loans?

I asked my Thai wife and she never heard of this and said that her parents wold have had to make the loan. My question to the very knowledgable Thai Visa Members , Is this possible or just another scam??

Thanks,

LL

Anything's possible but should be documented. Get a direct statement from the school if you're really interested in paying (or go directly to the school). If the loan isn't directly from the school, confirm that she was enrolled and ask for a financial statement of fees paid to the school on her behalf. If the numbers don't add up, well.....

Yes, it is possible, My friend owed approx. 250,000 baht . His aunt was a cosignor and the government threatened to seize her property if my friend didn't pay up. He went on a monthly payment plan of 2500 baht. Many students that moved to Bangkok for school were able to get low interest loans. It didn't dawn on my idiot friend that one day he would have to pay the student loans back. He lived in denial until the collections agent came looking for him. There are literally tens of thousands of students in serious debt to the government that due to their low paying jobs do not have the means to pay the loans back. It's somewhat difficult for for those on small salaries to service their debts. BTW, I think braniac has his debt down to around 200,000 baht now. Due to his debt load he lives a hand to mouth existence. His family can't pay off the debt for him as he comes from a rural village in the South.

Edited to Add this was for his undergrad diploma.

The student loans come from the Government, not the school, though inevitably they are processed through the school. The school has nothing to do with the collection.

I have known less reputable universities offering loans of up to 500,000 if students will enrol. The university takes no further responsibility; the student gets a grace period after he/she graduates, but then has to repay the whole amount, plus, I think, a low rate of interest. This has caused major problems, as many graduates cannot repay, and the Government is not keen on suing them for the money (which they don't have, anyway).

The whole Student Loan Scheme is a thoroughly badly thought-out system!
