THAI to use Amadeus Altea to modify booking system, reduce cost

BANGKOK, July 21 - Thai Airways International (THAI), the kingdom's national flag carrier, is to modify its online reservation system by applying the technology of Amadeus Altea in the hope of reducing its management cost by at least 10 per cent.

Airline president Piyasvasti Amranand signed an agreement on the matter with Amadeus Asia Pacific's president David Brett.

Mr Piyasvasti said the new system, used by 110 of the world's leading air carriers, is to start at the end of 2013.

The Amadeus Altea reservation system software provides the functions of airlines on sales and reservations, inventory management (flight schedules and seat capacity), and departure control, while outsourcing carriers' information technologies (IT) operations onto a community platform permitting them to share information with code-share partners and airline alliance.

The system can help carriers reduce airlines' IT costs by more than 10 per cent and can boost service efficiency to passengers by 10-15 per cent.

Seventeen of 27 member airlines of the Star Alliance network current use the Amadeus Altea booking system, which the THAI president hopes will help attract more passengers to choose the airline's services. (MCOT online news)

Does that also mean it reduces jobs too?

And if that 10% in reduced costs is distributed onto the passengers prices which to be honest are a bit expensive...

Wouldnt that be something worth posting...

Interesting a couple of weeks ag they were the number 5 international air line in the world.

Today they are trying to catch up in booking with 17 out of 27 carriers they are associated with.

It will take them to the end of 2013 to do that.

Just in time to see their new system became out dated.

This is a very good move for TG. The savings they discuss are what the airline pays Amadeus to have travel agents book a segment. In recent years the GDS has taken some of those fees and will incent the agent for booking a segment. So the airline is in fact paying the agent via a 3rd party.

The fee is based on each segment and ranges from $3.75 to $5, a normal 4 segment trip would cost the airline $20 plus all of the messaging fees.

Partnering with Amadeus is a good move for future Star Alliance code sharing.

While the airline world moves quickly to adopt direct bookings online-they go back to travel agents to manage/make bookings? Confused. (Not the first time)

THAI expects recovery in third quarter

Thai Airways International is projecting a 75-per-cent load factor in the current third quarter of the year, said executive vice president Bandit Chanapai.

New booking figures are reportedly growing significantly from East Asia, including Japan, though forward bookings from European markets are slow. The sluggishness is due to many rival airlines offering new aircraft featuring more entertainment and facilities.

"Thailand is still the most popular destination for Europeans and many tourists still want to come. THAI should gain business during the peak season," he said.

Advance bookings at THAI are reportedly positive, with 3-per-cent growth in both the third and fourth quarters year on year.

He added that if there were no serious issues in Thailand, the airline would enjoy high growth rates during the remaining months of the year.

The airline yesterday signed an agreement with Amadeus to use its Amadeus Altea customer-management software. The airline will start system migration before the end of the year and will complete it by 2013.

"This system will help THAI reduce fixed costs in the back office," Bandit said.

The Amadeus Alta Customer Management Solution supports individual airline requirements in a multi-carrier community environment, particularly beneficial to airlines that are members of a global alliance and need to share availability, fares, customer and booking information with partner airlines. This enables closer integration among partner airlines, delivering improved revenues and enabling a seamless customer experience across alliance members.

At the same time, THAI will also benefit from improved check-in processes and simplified tasks related to flight departures.

According to Bandit, THAI is also considering increasing frequencies between Bangkok and Osaka in Japan, a route on which the airline currently operates daily flights.

THAI is also planning to add more flights between Bangkok and Beijing, raising frequency from seven to 10 flights per week in the final quarter of this year.

Bandit said moving operations to second-tier cities would help the airline keep market share, particularly in highly competitive areas.

The adjustment is expected to serve higher market demand during the coming peak season.

"There will be a lot more travellers into Thailand during the last quarter, so the company should gain business from that traffic," said Bandit.

Took them 10+ years of loosing market share to discover this!

Last time I flew Thai internationally BKK-FRA on B747 was 11 may 2000 business class, that was a joke flight: 0/10.

Amadeus is the travel company who specialize in ticketing. Partlt owned by Iberia, Lufthansa & Air France.... BA may also now be involved. Their relationship with Thai Airways dates back 16 years or more.

in this day and age, why can't you still book the seat you want or see what is available

it is disguesting that the last seats on the plane or in front of the toilets or whatever have seats that does not incline to the back, that the row before can lean down onto you

and that you are paying the same price as everybody else to have a very bad seat for a 12 hours flight

On of TG's biggest complaints. No seat selection on domestic preium classes. One of the few airlines that still doesn't have that option.

Unlike other major carriers ,it offers no add-ons for Star Alliance Partners.

That's why we have to use agents * not the Amadeus reservation system

I hope it improves

Sorry Thai Int., but 2 YEARS time, That will co inside with the expected delivery of SOME new aircraft that had to be backworded through lack of cash. They are supposed to be in the top half dozen in the world Ha Ha, and it then in the FUTURE will cut 10% off what ?? again management costs==not management perks ??? Look for gods sake again we have to laugh at your sky high prices with old -aged planes on long haul, and now another futuristic promise, SOUNDS like the incoming party promises.

Get your act together NOW not in 2 years for this and up to QUOTE-8 years time for aircraft delivery thread on new aircraft ordered. An airline that is one of the worlds best.:redcard2::violin::Thaiflag:

Amadeus is the travel company who specialize in ticketing. Partlt owned by Iberia, Lufthansa & Air France.... BA may also now be involved. Their relationship with Thai Airways dates back 16 years or more.

Thai Amadeus is the local dealer for Amadeus solutions to travel agents. The Amadeus regional office is also in Bangkok for the Asia-Pacific region, indeed because of a long relationship with Thai.

Amadeus actually has two main businesses: travel agencies and airline systems... :jap:

This will not change the planes but they will have all they need to provide a good experience from booking to boarding.

... or kautchuk ... as in chewing-gum ....

Maybe my knowledge is outdated but there was an IATA-Agreement telling no airline is allowed to fly from one country to another without passing the home-country? (e.g. QATAR Air ha to pass Doha on the way from ZRH to BKK)

And i think those airlines stationed in mid-arabian countries want to have the passengers spend some bucks while stop-over. Many connections are lousy with a big waste of time. They might refill with their own oil too. So the pricing for the the ticket might be different...
