According to point #10 here, with an Ed visa, you can both own a car or bike and apply for a Thai license to drive it. That's good to know.

You can have vehicle registered in your name and get Thai DL with any kind of entrystamp, visa or permit to stay, as long as you are legally in the country

You still need to get the residency paper from Immigration where you need to give proof of your address, rental contract and/or copy of landlord's tabian ban (house paper).

PG = Phuket Gazette. Got it.

Waves are manual, right? I suppose I could get used to that (after a year of automatics)

They have a centrifugal clutch, you just release the throttle and change gears

you do not have to pull a lever to change gears, very easy to ride

you never put it back into first gear unless stopped or the bike will try to throw you over the handlebars :D

yep, in addition to passport you need a "Certificate of residence" issued by local Immigration or your Embassy. Most Embassyes are relaxed on docs for your accomodation while Phuket Immigration wants to see a rentalagreement or Tabien Baan. Some Immigration require much more

I'm pretty sure I rented and putted around on a Wave up in Prachuap Khiri Khan - it only took about 20 minutes to get used to. Just as well since if I'd crashed I would have been swarmed by monkeys.

Yes, as you lie there they will run away with your wallet and anything else they can get their hands on!

Just paid a visit to My Storage in Patong to double check some figures. I previously said they'd store stuff - about the size of a microwave box - for a month for b1000. What I meant was that that was about as much stuff as I'd need stored (excluding a scooter)

To clarify, the unit size is closer to that of a mid-sized fridge (in keeping with my appliance theme). BUT you have to pay a reg fee of approx b500 so all up, for the smallest unit of storage, you're looking at about 1500 for a month and an additional 1000 per month after that.

Little 'peng' for me, but a top-notch facility nonetheless. I can't imagine any of my belongings going walkabout from there while I'm out of Thailand.

I don't know where you get those figures from. It's 995 baht a month for a 1 cubic metre storage locker. Yes, like any comercial lease, there is a 1 month bond and yes, I think there is a one off registration fee. As mentioned in a previous post, they offer 15% discount on paying 6 months up front and a bigger discount for 12 months up front, but, after bond and registration fee, it's only 995 baht per month, and this if you just want to pay month to month, otherwise, the discounts kick in.

Where do you get "1500 for a month and an additional 1000 per month after that?" Are you talking about storing your bike as well, or just your box of stuff? If the bike as well, also mentioned in a previous post, there is a big market out there for safe and secure storage of motorbikes on the island, or, a buy back scheme or even 2nd hand auctions every week for arriving and departing farang.

He means 1500 baht for the first month, then, 1000 baht every month after that.

Yes, you are right. When I first read the post, quickly, I thought he meant 2500 baht a month. Anyway, for me, a small price to pay to be independant and know you gear will be safe.

Yup - I rounded up. 995 -> 1000, plus the one off reg fee which was about 485 baht (again, I just call it 500 to keep things simple). Not factoring in the bond fee or any kind of bike storage)

So basically for a guy like me looking to test the waters for just a month initially, it's going to cost 1500 approx (995 plus 485 reg), and another 1000 (995) if I need to extend beyond that.

I agree it's not a bad deal to be assured your things are secured to climate-controlled perfection, but obviously it all depends on the financial situation of the renter. Or how "kinyao" they are :)

I don't know if there would be any need to "test the waters" at My Storage. The place is rock solid. I think it would all come down how import to you is what you need to store. Computer, expensive wine, electrical appliances etc etc. If they were stolen, or not returned, or sold because the family's buffalo is sick etc etc you would be out of pocket a lot more than what My Storage charges you. On the other hand, if you just have some T-Shirts, shorts, towels and bed linen etc it's probably not worth it because you can replace these for cheap.

Yeah - at this point it comes down to storing with My Storage or just bunging it all in a friend's roof. The laptop (worth $1100 when I bought it 18 months ago) and 2tb ext storage thing are the only possessions of any real worth.

The rest would just be worth like $40-$80..

The way you promote My Storage people will think you have a interest in the place :D

If the only thing you have of value is a lap top computer why not take it with you then you can use it anywhere

They allow laptop computers as hand luggage on the airlines :)

I know. I've done that in the past a lot, and it's a huge pain in the backside. Like 16" screen, 3kg huge - with a nice big plug and 45 mins worth of battery life away from the mains. I'm planning to backpack it a bit around Cambodia and it's just totally impractical to drag such a beast around with me.

In fact, I specifically went out and bought a netbook (about a third the size and weight and with 9 times the battery lifespan) so I could save myself the trouble of lugging around my old laptop on trips and constantly looking for a place to plug in.

It's still a decent laptop and I want to keep it for when I'm staying in the same place for a month or more, it's just not suited to travelling extensively with.

Since I'm thinking of using Phuket as a base in between trips to other parts of SE Asia, it makes sense to store expensive items like that and the external drive along with larger items I'd be using again but would never pack and take with me, like fans, glass coffee plungers, chairs etc. Things I don't want to have to keep buying over and over again.
